Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Adan.
Angela, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started working as a veterinary technician when I was 14 years old and wanted to go to vet school, but my path changed when I discovered how many dogs were dying in shelters everyday. I worked as a veterinary technician for 14 years, then started working at shelter and humane societies and did that for ten years. I started a dog walking and training company and did that for six years. Now I own a pet CBD company called Free to Be where part of the portions get donated back into dog rescue. I also have been fostering dogs for the last ten years. Right now, I foster for Orange Twins Rescue and Bevill Dog Rescue and donate most of my time to helping more at-risk dogs have a second chance at life. I only adopt special needs or senior dogs because a lot of people don’t want to commit to helping a dog who needs round the clock care or one that could potentially pass away months after you adopt him/her. My entire life is dedicated to help dogs and that’s what I do all day every day.
I currently have two dogs in wheelchairs, Juniper and Ferris. Junie was hit by a car when she was a puppy and was going to be euthanized by her owner because of the amount of care she now needed and Ferris was born with spina bifida. They are my world and I love taking care of them. I also adopted a senior chihuahua with no jaw named Tater Tot and a senior lab who is now a retired guide dog. And then there’s crater my shin tzu who is blind and deaf- he doesn’t have any eyes. He was found wandering in Castaic with a diaper on him. And Freddie! Freddie Mercury is well known on social media for being a very inspirational dog in a tiny little body. She was born with some deformities and also suffered some trauma that left her unable to walk normally. She only weighs 3 pounds but has a mighty energy. You can see more of her on @ready_freddie_ on Instagram.
My mornings are spent cleaning up after all my dogs and my foster dogs that I currently care for and then in the afternoons, I take them all adventuring. I’m able to really get to know them and see what kind of home they can be in so I can help to get them adopted and have it be forever. I know what an awesome resource it is for a rescue to have a volunteer who has been involved in dog rescue for over ten years so I try and help as much as possible.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My life has been full of challenges but it has made me grow into the incredibly resilient person I am today. This time last year, I lost my job and my housing pretty abruptly so I had two weeks to give away most of what I had and move everything else into storage. It can be very challenging to find a dog-friendly place to live when I tell people how many dogs I have so it took me five months to find a place to live. In that time, my dogs and I moved into an RV. Since I had a lot of free time now on my hands, I decided to help some rescue and start transporting their dogs to different states where they were more likely to be able to find a new home.
Almost every year for the past six years, I could tell you some story about how I lost my housing and had to figure out a plan for my dogs and I very quickly. Right now, I’m saving as much as I possibly can so that I can buy a house for my dogs so we never become homeless again because that was the most challenging time in my life. When I was in the RV I had six dogs with me and two of them were incontinent and in wheelchairs so that came with many struggles.
Please tell us about Free To Be CBD.
Free to Be is a pet CBD company. I use CBD for a lot of my dogs already so I thought, why not share that with others as well. I’m most proud about being able to give back financially to other rescues who need help. For every bottle sold, I’m able to donate $5 to a monthly charity. I always try and choose a smaller rescue who really needs help. I find great joy in giving back to others.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I don’t think I could say that I would have done anything differently because it got me to exactly where I am today. I don’t know anyone out there who is as dedicated in donating their time to dogs. Literally, all I do all day everyday is for the benefit of dogs and it fulfills me on levels that nothing else ever has.
