Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Fels.
Andrew, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was always interested in the TV, the movie entertainment industry and really wanted to do animation. My training began when I attended Cal State Channel Islands for Studio Art / Digital Media. I then got an internship at STARZ / Film Roman. On my 3rd day there I showed my student projects to the editor I was helping. The next day he introduced me to another editor who took a look at my work and hired me on the spot. That was how I got my start. I’ve worked on animation movies and TV cartoon shows as an editor, visual effects artist, background artist and slowly moved into video shooting. 6 years ago, I started my own video production company and have been involved full time while developing my own style. I have focused mainly on the wedding industry, bringing a new feel to wedding videos that are fun, uplifting and invoke deep emotions as people watch them. My goal is to give couples a video of their big day that they would be able to watch over and over again and leave them smiling and wanting to watch it again and again.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, my first challenge was getting my name out there. I visited all of the venues and met the catering managers and event planners. I had very little work at that time to show and it was hard to get them to refer me to their clients. Along the way I made friends, met other vendors and went to wedding shows where people could see my work. All that effort paid off and now referrals are the main part of my business. My business also required significant investment in the equipment as well as its maintenance and repair. It was and will always be a lot of work to keep building and growing a business.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Andrew Fels Productions story. Tell us more about the business.
Andrew Fels Productions has been in business for 6 years. Over that time, we have worked hard to build a name for ourselves in the wedding industry. My videos have been a huge hit. Couples that didn’t want a video, after looking at our work, are now are looking forward to having a video of their event. When we shoot there are a several things that we do and only a handful of wedding video companies know how to do correctly. We specialize in being able to shoot at night in the darkest areas without using video lights and we never use any equipment other than our steady hands for all camera movements. All of the videographers in my group have to learn our style so that all of the video footage shot looks consistent. I have two video teams, one lead by me and the other led by my assistant, who has been with me since the doors opened. This has allowed us to do two events a day with our customers getting a consistently great product no matter who shoots their wedding.
My big secret to getting to where I am at right now was to not listen to all of the conventional advice that I received from videographers. I’m constantly looking for better ways to do my job and provide my clients with outstanding videos.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the wedding industry, you can see the big shift happening which is why I tell people not to listen to what other videographers tell them. This new generation is not growing up with the style and music older generations grew up with and want something different and new. This new group of couples are coming in and having first dances to Electronic Dance Music and listening to DJs and not bands. Their weddings are full of energy which does not work with the video style most people are doing now. This new energy will change the way of shooting and what everything looks like. More fun, more uplifting, more energy with faster dancing to electronic music. Our key to success is to always listen to our customers and to provide them with the latest styles and techniques.
