Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Love.
Hi Andrea, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi,
I’m Andrea Love, a rock turntablist (DJ) and media/live event production professional, based in Los Angeles, CA.
I started DJing in bars back in Michigan, and then decided to go to radio/video school in Southfield (a Detroit suburb), I spent ten years in radio, both commercial rock radio in Michigan at WWBN – Flint’s Rock Radio Banana 101.5 FM, as a host, content creator, promotions coordinator, and production assistant. I then spent a few years in community centered public radio here in LA on KPFK 90.7 where I hosted a rock music show called “Real Rock Radio”. On that show I curated two hour shows every week of music completely of my choice. I sometimes would do themed shows, or sets, like my “Valentines Day Drama” show where I used rock songs to go through a story of being in love, being dumped, being broken hearted, coming back and finding a new mate. That was a ton of fun!
I left radio to pursue my love of playing music for people a bit further and went back to school at Beat Junkie Institute Of Sound. It’s a school for turntablists and it’s incredible! The world famous DJ crew called Beat Junkies have toured the world for decades and they decided to open a school to teach the craft back in 2017.
I am now a rock turntablist. I mix, scratch, loop, finger drum and more. The twist is that when I perform shows, I host my sets like a radio show, including band info, upcoming concert promotions and giveaways. I’ve played The Whisky A Go Go (I even opened for Robby Krieger of The Doors there, TWICE, once with drummer John Densmore there too!!), The Viper Room, & Lucky Strike to name a few.
As a professional freelancer, I do many other things in the live events field as well including podcast production, stage management, event bartender, stagehand, emcee, live band karaoke host, production assistance and more!
I absolutely love LA and being a transplant here, I feel like it’s my obligation to add to this city as much as possible and take good care of it. Thank you LA for kicking my butt a bit when I first got here, and teaching me how to be such a better version of myself.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Haha. I’d like to think zero of the people you’ve interviewed have said it’s all been smooth. It is definitely not smooth, and as most independent artists and production people do, I wear MANY hats. Sometimes it’s like 8-10 hats at a time, piled atop one another! I often also ask myself why on earth I chose the heaviest professions. My big DJ set up weighs twice as much as I do, and it’s growing as I grow my show. Before moving to my current home, my old apartment had TWENTY EIGHT (yes 28) stairs and two locked doors to navigate. Unloading at 1AM after a long show day was… we’ll say “not my favorite”, but it’s so rewarding that I’m able to do what I do, that it was ok. My current location, however, only has three stairs. 😉
Life as a professional freelancer means really having to juggle a schedule with precision. I work for several clients and companies, and while it’s beautiful to be able to have so much flexibility, freedom and fun – it can also be a lot to manage.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love my works. I think people used to think that being a “jack of all trades, master of none” was a bad thing. I don’t believe that anymore. I’ve been working in this way of doing many things, all of the time, for over a decade. I’ve had more fun than I could ever have time to talk about. I am not the master of one specific thing, but I am quite masterful at several different things that all work well together – to be able to be the master of just being Andrea Love.
I specialize in rock music. I specialize in entertainment in many forms. I’m known for loving live music and events, talking, laughing, creating and partying as my profession. A “professional party animal”, if you will. I’m known for being all over the place, having experiences that I could never have if I was just master of one thing. I’ve helped Jack Black on stage during an auction for KPFK. I’ve worked at the Emmys. I’ve been a part of many amazing radio promotions from scuba diving lessons, shooting at a gun range, party bus for listeners to go see Megadeth, and zip lining at a hard rock festival. I’ve helped to disassemble AC/DC’s concert stage, played as a turntablist on songs, sang at jams, and that’s just skimming the surface!
I am a producer on a podcast called “Profiles With Maggie LePique” and have produced interviews with Serj Tankian of System Of A Down, Stanley Clarke and Jackson Browne. At any given time, no one I know is ever surprised at what random place I’m at, doing whatever (usually exciting and unique) task. I have had a blast in life, while earning my keep in the process.
I’m known for being very excited, welcoming, vulnerable, and adventurous. I once spent an afternoon walking around NAMM with Stevie Wonder and his entourage, simply because I started talking to a random person who complimented my Detroit hat! The next thing I know I’m in a room with like 15 people and Stevie testing out a keyboard!! I’m the person that talks to people, makes friends and randomly runs into people I know from some strange story 7 years ago in a city across the map. I’m known for taking chances and being fully aware that I could fail (it happens) but I could succeed. I’m proud of my ability to feel the fear and try it anyway.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Well, as for podcasts, obviously the best one in the world is the one I work on “Profiles With Maggie LePique”. I also like “The Curated Culture” with Robbie Deezle (I’ve been a guest – shameless promotion). “On Purpose with Jay Shetty”, “Ram Das Here And Now”, “Soul Talk with Kute Blackson”, “SuperSoul with Oprah”, and usually personal and spiritual development shows are my jam.
The same with books. “The Game Of Life And How To Play It” (Florence Scovel Shinn), “Think And Grow Rich” (Napoleon Hill), “The Alchemist” (Paulo Coelho) “The Celestine Prophecy” (James Redfield) to name a few.
I live on YouTube in my car as I drive all over SoCal. The Master Key Society has great audiobooks from the early manifestation and spiritual development teachers from the early 1900’s. I also love getting my laugh on, so stand up and videos from Tony Baker, KevOnStage, Tahir Moore, Patrick Cloud and their crew always get me laughing again, no matter what.
For apps, I love the Innercise app from John Assaraf, The Pattern, and The Libby app, which is for electronic book rental from the Los Angeles Public Library. Thousands of audio and e-books for rent, free from your phone.
And several hours long phone calls with my best friend Jules and my Aunt Berneita. I don’t know what in tarnation would be of me without those.
