Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Laslett.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amy. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I never had the dream of getting into entertainment but knew from a young age I wanted to be my own boss. I started various companies as a young kid with childhood friends and fell in love with every aspect that goes into running a business.
In college, I began babysitting for my favorite college professor and his wife turned out to be a movie producer. She had me read scripts, write coverage, make cast lists – all things I had no idea how to do. She was an invaluable mentor, walking me through every aspect and I was fortunate enough to get a first-hand crash course on the industry.
After working with her for a few years, I joined forces with a prolific Producer, Jason Berger who had just started Kids at Play. My education in the industry continued under his expertise and guidance. The energy and vision of the company was a perfect match for me, and I’ve been there for ten years.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who runs a company to say it’s a smooth road. In fact, I’d say there are more hard days than easy ones. It’s part of what makes the success so sweet.
I think the most challenging part is that everything becomes your baby – you care so deeply for every person and every project, and when that’s not reciprocated it’s hard not to let it affect you in a personal way.
That said, I’ve learned through every bump that it forces me to come up with a different solution and a different way of thinking it through. And I think that – most of the time – makes the product better than it would have been without the challenge.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kids at Play – what should we know?
Kids at Play is a full-service production company. We produce TV, Film, Digital and Branded work across all genres.
I think that’s what makes us unique – is that we never put ourselves in a niche. We find projects that we love, and we want to watch, we don’t just buy them because it fits a certain brand.
I love that we’re able to toggle between a romantic comedy film and a horror digital series; between a comedic brand spot and an unscripted television show. I think it keeps everyone – from our employees to our partners – interested in what we’re going to do next.
