Today we’d like to introduce you to Amos Glick.
Amos, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I first got interested in theatre at The Cambridge School of Weston; a bohemian, artsy High School in Massachusetts. Later, at Earlham College (Richmond, IN) I studied acting and improvisation with Len Mozzi. In college my specific interest became performance with a political bent. After learning about political theatre in the Bay Area and having become a huge deadhead, I moved to Berkeley in 1990. I began to volunteer and study with the Tony Award-winning San Francisco Mime Troupe and got involved in the local improv scene by taking classes with Jim Cranna (The Committee, National Theatre of The Deranged.) In the early 90s I also played in a band at various venues in the Bay Area.
After a brief stint in LA taking classes with The Groundlings and ACME Theatre I returned to San Francisco and became a collective member of the Mime Troupe in 1997. The Mime Troupe doesn’t do pantomime, but political, musical comedy. They employ a very physical style is based on Commedia Dell’Arte and Melodrama. By the time I left the Bay Area in 2007, I had appeared in 15 original productions with the Troupe and also worked as a lyricist and workshop leader. With the Troupe, I performed all over the U.S. and in several foreign countries. With a fellow Trouper I co-created and performed The Dick & Dubya Show: A Republican Outreach Cabaret with fellow Trouper, which had a five months run at the Marsh Theater. On the improv front, In 1999, while creating the vocal improv troupe Tonal Chaos I met members of the acclaimed long-form company True Fiction Magazine and began workshopping with them and subsequently appeared on countless stages with them including festivals in California and Europe. In 2006 I also became a company member of BATS Improv in San Francisco after completing their Guest Performer program.
The physical style of the Mime Troupe organically led to studying and performing clown. In 1998 I worked with the New Pickle Family Circus and In 2007 I moved to Las Vegas on a six week contract to perform as a clown in Le Rêve, a water/circus spectacle created by Franco Dragone housed at the Wynn Casino in Las Vegas. I stayed nine years and in addition to performing ten shows a week (a total of 3551!), I found time to start his own late-night variety show called OK, OK the Amos Glick variety show which won “Best Budget Show” in 2014 (Seven Magazine).
As a teacher, I have taught Physical Theater and Improvisation workshops all over the country and in Italy and Germany and was an Artist in Residence at The SF School of The Arts. Locally I was the improv instructor at The Actor’s Studio of Orange County.
As a director, I trained students in the Mime Troupe’s Summer Workshop for several years and directed their final presentations. I directed Ira Marlowe’s one man show How To Write A Song and helped to stage and direct The Berkeley Opera’s Falstaff. Working with contortionist, Ms. Charlamay, I created an award-winning comedic Burlesque act that has been seen in venues around the world. In 2017 I served as acting coach and co-created the clown acts for the show, Reveria, at The Municipal Circus of Bucharest in Romania.
Other acting credits include roles with The Graeme Of Thrones (Game of Thrones parody, National Tour), Piff the Magic Dragon’s Piffmass Pifftacular, The Alternative Theatre Ensemble, SF Shakespeare Festival, Marin Shakespeare Company and The Tenderloin Opera Company. I have been a sketch comedian, clown, puppeteer and improviser with: The Management, The Daredevil Chicken Club, The Gazillionaire Show, Klezmermania, Bread and Puppet, The 1230 Clown Show and others. I wrote, produced and starred in A MAN WAKES UP, a short comedy that has screened at many festivals in the U.S. and Europe, winning several awards along the way. Other Film: POPOVICH: THE ROAD TO HOLLYWOOD, THE VILLAGE BARBERSHOP, OPAL and AROUND THE FIRE. TV: JUST ROLL WITH IT, AGENTS OF SHIELD, and NASH BRIDGES.
In my musical life, I played guitar and mandolin with Koocheekoo in Las Vegas and played with Charity Kahn & The JAMband, The Bastard Brothers and A Rare Thing in San Francisco. I released an EP of original music under the band name Ponder in 2010.
During the COVID shut down, I set up a channel on XOTV to showcase new and old videos of comedy and songs including a Corona parody of My Sharona called My Corona.
In addition to being a performer, I also edit demo reels, produce movies and theatrical corporate presentations and am a Spatial Data Analyst.
I live in North Hollywood with my cat Winslow, study and perform long-form improvisation at Impro Studio and play street hockey to trick myself into thinking I’m getting enough exercise. I’m also a HUGE deadhead!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Soooooo many struggles, Lack of work as a performer is a constant frustration. Though I have been very lucky to mostly work as a performer my whole adult life, there have been several lulls, times where I have almost quit all together and major disappointments. Both times I have lived in LA, it’s been a tremendous struggle just to get into the casting office. While it’s nice to have a lot of different work and variety in my work life, I am always looking for the next gig… that’s exhausting! I find I go in phases where I get frustrated and even angry, especially about the seemingly impenetrable wall of Hollywood, and other times when I think “nothing’s gonna stop me” and I power through doing what I need to do to move forward.
Timoz Productions – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Timoz Productions is the name I use when I produce something. It’s not an actual business. Mostly I am a performer. I have traveled the USA and the world performing political musical comedy, clown, music and improv for thirty years. I am proud of most of the shows and acts I have been in! The most significant Timoz Productions project was my short comedy film, A Man Wakes Up. It’s a live-action comedy with no dialogue that has a basis in clown work, but aims for wider appeal. It won several juried and audience awards at film festivals and is currently viewable on XOTV and Shorts TV. I also edit demo reels going by the business name Reels For Real. I also have started to work as a creative consultant for theatrical corporate presentations. I had a blast helping a firm with their installation and the Experiential Marketing Summit in 2018.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
A few things come to mind:
Performing political comedy for thousands of people in Dolores Park for several years on the 4th of July with The San Francisco Mime Troupe… The most patriotic I have ever felt.
Performing clown in theatrical circus.
My short film, A Man Wakes Up.
My self released CD “A Little Bit Sane”.
Creating and performing in the vocal improv group Tonal Chaos.
Moving to Hollywood and actually getting work within just three years!
