Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexia Durandy.
Hi Alexia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey as a makeup artist began in New York, where I studied makeup and developed a strong foundation in both technique and artistry. Learning in such a vibrant environment gave me a real appreciation for precision and the creative possibilities within makeup.
After completing my studies in 2017, I focused on building my portfolio in both Paris and the South of France where I am originally from. I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with prestigious magazines like Vogue and Marie Claire, which allowed me to refine my skills further and gain experience in high-fashion and editorial makeup.
When I felt ready to take the next step, I moved to Los Angeles in 2023 to establish my own brand, Alexia Beauty Makeup, the agency experienced rapid growth, thanks to our focus on a french, elegant approach to makeup. From glam to natural and healthy looks, we emphasize versatility while staying ahead of the latest trends and styles in the industry. Today, ABM is thriving in both Los Angeles and New York with a talented team of makeup artists and hairstylists who I’ve personally trained in my techniques.
Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working on exciting projects, including the Atlas movie premiere, various other movie premieres, fashion shows, and prestigious events like the Emmy Awards. I’ve also done makeup for productions like *The Golden Bachelor* and collaborated with major platforms like Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Hulu.
Additionally, I’ve had the honor to participate as a judge for Glam Wars, a makeup artist competition show soon on TV. Every step of this journey has been about growth, creativity, and connecting with people to bring their visions to life through makeup.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Before makeup, I had previous business experiences, I started my first business at the age of 18. It was a tough world and that didn’t work out, I’ve faced failure. I’ve been at the bottom, feeling very unhappy with my life choices and deeply discouraged. Finding makeup was a revelation, it completely changed my life. I realized that pursuing my passion was the best decision I’ve ever made. I was always good at it, and it gave me purpose and direction.
The makeup industry itself isn’t always easy. The competition can be tough, and starting out, it’s common to feel undervalued. Beginners often face low pay and long hours, which can be discouraging. But learning to value my skills and taking the leap to start my own business was the second-best decision I’ve made in my career.
Now, my career truly feels like a dream. Every day, I get to meet fascinating and inspiring people. I work with a team of wonderful young women whose energy and dedication inspire me, and I feel grateful that I can inspire them in return with my story and career. I feel incredibly blessed every day to be doing what I love.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve had the honor of having my work featured in renowned publications like Vogue and Marie Claire. I’ve also had the privilege of doing makeup for Atlas movie premiere, Inside Chinatown TV show, The Golden Bachelors, the Emmy Awards etc.
As both a celebrity and fashion makeup artist, my work requires dedication and a strong commitment to excellence. Beyond these high-profile events, I specialize in bridal makeup, creating timeless, elegant looks for one of the most important days in a person’s life.
I have a deep passion for creating looks that enhance natural beauty while incorporating a pop of color to make each client shine. My approach is rooted in artistry and precision, and I use only luxury makeup brands to ensure the best possible results.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk is an essential part of growth, both personally and professionally. If you never take risks, you’ll never have the chance to evolve or push yourself beyond what you already know. Personally, I believe that every time you’re faced with a decision, it’s crucial to choose the harder path, the one that challenges you. Most people tend to take the easier route because it’s safe, but real growth only happens when you’re willing to step outside of your comfort zone.
For me, one of the biggest risks I’ve taken was deciding to open my own makeup agency. At the time, it was a huge leap, but if I hadn’t taken that risk, I never would have been able to give my dreams the opportunity to come true. And it was worth it, my agency has been a success, and that experience has been incredibly rewarding. I learned to trust in my own abilities and realized that sometimes, you just have to take that leap and believe in yourself. So, my perspective on risk is this: don’t doubt your potential, and never let fear hold you back. You have the power to make your dreams a reality – you just need to take that first step.
