Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Correa Jr.
Alex, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
First of all I am an artist from a child I started at two years old and carried on my whole life, never ever did I think this will be a primary source of income, but happy that I kept this passion going. I did most mediums graffiti and acrylic paint and color pencils. After graduating, I started tattooing in November of 2004.
I didn’t consider myself to be “book smart,” so I extended my art to Mt. Sac community college to take part, not to learn art but just to keep my day to day hobby and talent up to date. I’m am self-taught but did take some exciting classes like illustration and life painting. My teacher and now friend Kieth Batchellar. Who is well known in the fine art community and who used to draw Disney movie covers. At that time he loved my art and asked me if I wanted to draw at Disneyland doing portrait and caricatures like he did in the 60’s. I took him up on the offer and called the Disney district for the art department and set up an interview. I got the job and drew there for four years.
Then at the same time, Drew for O’lerry and Partners and did commission work for Kawasaki. Also painted for other studios in Orange County like studio PNG. During all this time, I was always tattooing and staying relative for my art. Now I’ve been tattooing for 16 years and I love every minute of it. This is my career. I worked in the LA area and Orange County, now I’m in the city of Upland. Tattooing is all I do. My art allows me work hard and take care of my beautiful family, my lady and I Brenda have a handsome six year old son name Alex III. Forever do I see my self tattooing and will continue to until the casket drops!
Has it been a smooth road?
The hardest thing about art and this journey is to learn and keep the mind set that “you don’t know it all” and there always room to learn from anything in life and anyone. And took keep goof habits to carry on for life and that helps you with work or my art, luckily it’s the same for me. Also now that I have a family it’s important to have great balance for Family and for work. I sacrificed allot for my art and very happy I did. I lost many friends but gained so much more. Heartaches and pain bleeding paint, but ultimately the best sacrifice I endured.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
My art is labeled FatBoy tattoos… I’m a black and grey and color artist I’m known for photo realism and fine detail. I’m proud of the service I’m able to give everyone and help them bring they’re ideas to life. I don’t feel like I’m different to anyone but like to see myself as an equal or underdog most of time they’re plenty of talented artist here in California. I’m just trying to make my lil wave in this big pond of Southern California.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love everything about Los Angeles and Orange County to the people, the art community and the whole diversity that we hold proudly. I have no dislikes for either with nothing but Cali Love.
