Today we’d like to introduce you to Adolfo Gomringer.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Adolfo. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Early 1998 my father migrated from Peru to Covina, CA; like most stories you hear, simply for one purpose, to seek a better future. Anxiously waiting to reunite, my mother, younger brother, and myself followed in 2001. By 2004, my father ventured out on his own in the trade our family has come to love, hardwood flooring. In 2004, I was around 14 years old and I learned the craft along my father’s side after school and on the weekends. Footsteps were planted and my brother and I followed.
During my high school years, my dream was to become a doctor so I worked day and night to be ranked top ten in my class. When applying for colleges came around, I was more than excited when learning I had been accepted to UC Irvine Pre-Medicine (School of Henry Samueli). However, I was faced with reality when I learned that at that time, immigrants were not granted financial aid. Regardless, I knew I needed to succeed whether it be in the medical field or not. So I learned the ins and outs of my father’s flooring business. With the help of my family and peers, in 2014 I applied for my California Contractors License.
Since then, our business has grown immensely! Our family business went from doing small residential work to commercial work. Due to my father teaching us our values and with the right support system, we’ve been able to continue building relationships. Most recently we landed our largest job yet by having the pleasure of working to complete the Dream Hotel, TAO Restaurant and Beauty & Essex in Hollywood. We could not have asked for a better way to showcase our work.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Would not necessarily claim it to be smooth sailing as being such a small company but having such a large vision, there were times were my family and I scrambled for solutions. Mainly not having capital for our business was our setback in the process of growing our business. Thankfully there have not been major issues that were not resolved promptly.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about AG Flooring – what should we know?
We have only been licensed for four years. We specialize in hardwood flooring but have revolved to custom millwork as well. In July of 2016, I applied for a Contractor’s License in Demolition. I have had zero experience in demolition but as of April 2017, our gross sales is $98,000. This was a decision I decided to take in order to grow our company as a brand. Same goes for our flooring division, like previously mentioned our gross sales in 2014 were very low, 2015 we were at about $50,000 and 2016 we landed our first million-dollar contract.
Coming from an immigrant background, what we strive for is to succeed but yet continue our values of family first. I believe that is why our business do so well in commercial work. We give each client the exact attention they are seeking rather than treating them just as another “contract”. My family and I take pride in what we do and how we are perceived.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I definitely give most of the credit to my family, who without them this would not be possible.
My parents, Adolfo Sr. and Maria Soledad, my brothers Irving and Brian, a man who took my family in without hesitation Terry, my wife Kim, and last but certainly not least Robert Kuhl who trusted my family to work from since the very first meeting and has never let us down since because of the work he has provided us not only has my family had financial support but also the families of the twenty employees our company employs.
