Meet Adam Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Washington.

Adam, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It was in my first year in high-school when I picked up my first camera. It was a simple compact digital point and shoot got during a good deal during Black Friday. I started to document life around me, from random hangouts to family gatherings. I joined my high school’s yearbook team senior year and thought I was pretty good.

It wasn’t till I downloaded Instagram and posted my first photo in 2014 that I realized I didn’t know much about photography. So I went on YouTube, watched many videos and learned about composition, aperture, lighting, and editing. Luckily I was in college and got to practice on many of my friends. I joined my college’s yearbook team freshman year and continued it all four years. I shot anything and everything from department group photos to fast-paced games of athletes in action. It was a junior year that I truly found my passion of shooting people. I continued to post my favorite portraits on Instagram and watched it start to grow. I went from shooting my friends to reaching out to people on Instagram to shoot.

In the summer of 2017, I reached out to an agency and got a positive response to shoot their model. With that opportunity, I ran with it and was opened to the world of fashion and lifestyle photography. Since then I’ve continued to learn and shoot, getting new opportunities and challenges all the time, from getting to shoot Internet personality Nash Grier for the cover of a magazine to recently shooting A$AP Ferg live in Hollywood. I’ve been blessed to work with upcoming brands and shoot some amazing editorials. It has been an amazing journey with being able to meet people from all around the world and capturing their looks and personalities.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Photography in Los Angeles and you can say almost anywhere is really competitive. With an increase in access to incredible photography technology, almost everyone with a smartphone has a way to take photos. Thus I’ve found out that you need a niche, a specific style. Though people may copy my looks or my concepts, people have come to love and differentiate my work from others.

With the type of shooting and editing I do, people have recognized a signature style to my work. Being an independent photographer comes with its challenges. I’ve had last-minute cancellations, missing pieces from looks, and I’ve fallen into the ocean twice, but it’s also amazing to wake up and do what you love and get paid and recognized for it.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in fashion/lifestyle/portrait photography with a focus on males. My photography is known for being vibrant in not only colors but in energy and personality. I love capturing a fun time usually at the beach. I’m proud of being able to quickly connect with models in a short time and being able to capture their vitality. There is also a lot of communication and I make sure everyone is on the same page so that the client and I are both happy with the end product.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
This year 2020 is going to be a big year. I’m working on developing a semi-annual magazine, that is tentatively going to launch in the summer. It’s quite a bit of an endeavor and I’m learning a lot about graphic design, but it will be incredibly rewarding to showcase many of the incredible new faces to the world. There are always new models to discover. I also plan on finally leaving Southern California a bit with a trip to New York in the Fall.
