Life & Work with Yuheng Zhu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuheng Zhu.

Yuheng Zhu

Hi Yuheng, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m an Unreal Engine artist and creative technologist based in Los Angeles, though my journey began in the realm of architecture. After graduating from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree, I got a chance to work at AntiStatics Architecture in Beijing, China, as the first Unreal VR Architectural Visualization Specialist the studio recruited.

Discovering Unreal Engine’s potential for crafting mesmerizing virtual experiences was a turning point that redefined my path. This newfound passion resonated deeply, sparking a shift in my trajectory. Infusing each virtual environment with a palpable authenticity became my creative compass while overcoming technical challenges fueled my drive. I am truly captivated by the fusion of technology and creativity.

In 2021, I took a bold step by relocating to Los Angeles to pursue a Master of Science in Fiction and Entertainment at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). Since then, I’ve immersed myself in diverse corners of the entertainment industry, embracing every opportunity to harness Unreal Engine’s power. My freelance journey has led me to contribute to a spectrum of projects, ranging from immersive theme park ride films to virtual production, projection mapping, and concert visuals. Among these experiences, my involvement in Coachella projects holds a special place. Beyond its musical allure, Coachella’s visual kaleidoscope offers a captivating canvas for creativity that truly resonates with me.

Los Angeles boasts a thriving community of visual artists, and I consider it a privilege to be part of this dynamic collective.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Discovering my true passion led me to a challenging crossroads, prompting a switch to an entirely new career path. Despite the uncertainty, the rush of adrenaline-fueled my resolve to embrace the uncharted. As a newcomer, I lacked the experience of established artists, but I believe my strength resides in my problem-solving skill and insatiable curiosity. I’m always fascinated by the latest technologies and am constantly on the path of learning something new. Also, my architectural background endows me with a distinctive interdisciplinary perspective, enriching my approach to digital environment design.

Switching to a new career path demanded perseverance and adaptability, with every obstacle becoming a stepping stone for personal growth. Looking back, the decision to leap was transformative. Struggles and uncertainties sculpted me into who I am today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Being a versatile Unreal artist, I specialize in designing and crafting Unreal Engine environments, with a focus on intricate natural settings. My skill set spans from worldbuilding to cinematic animation rendering. What sets me apart is my knack for resolving technical challenges, particularly those tied to the Blueprint system. My architectural foundation equips me with a balance of aesthetics and practicality, guiding me to approach creations with both visual finesse and logical precision.

I like to work on interesting and challenging projects. One of them is the ride film created for the Hypersphere 360º ride at the theme park Sea World Abu Dhabi. As an Unreal technical artist at Medici Media (formerly Mousetrappe), I navigated the complexities of panoramic rendering, refining my skills while simulating authentic underwater environments.

Virtual production and concert visuals also captivate my creative realm. This year, I had the privilege of partaking in the virtual production of a feature film produced by A24. I can’t wait to see it on the big screen. I’ve freelanced at Human Person studio as an Unreal Engine animator and helped create the animation for The Kid Laroi’s “STAY” performance at Coachella 2023. It was exciting to witness my work on the stage.

While Unreal Engine is my primary focus, I work with a miscellaneous collection of software tools. TouchDesigner is one of my favorites. As a designer and TouchDesigner animator at VTProDesign, I got to create a series of generative animations for mapped projection on the art installation “Eden” by Los Angeles-based artist Maggie West. “Eden” is one of the four monumental art installations built for Coachella 2023 and also one of the world’s largest 3D color photography installations.

Among my endeavors, my personal project <Deep Time> holds a special place. This Unreal game cinematic trailer unravels a robot’s journey through the relics of a post-apocalyptic wasteland, where cities lie fossilized, and humans are but a memory. From concept design and worldbuilding to animation, each stage was meticulously crafted by me individually. This short film can be watched on YouTube.

What does success mean to you?
To me, success is to be an excellent team player. The remarkable projects I’ve been a part of couldn’t be accomplished without the dedicated collaborative effort of the team. A successful creator ought to be supportive of colleagues and easy to work with. I always keep that in mind, and I’m all about pushing to be that kind of artist.
