Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Jacobs.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been painting my whole life. I remember being four and picking up my first paint brush. My mom had to bribe me to go to kindergarten when I was 5…. She said “see those murals on the wall? You can paint like that too”….. and so I did! Now, as a 39 year old mother, wife, and female artist, I am just now embracing the immense power my voice and art have. There are so many more layers to my voice as a painter than who I was 10 years ago painting. My art is abstract, loud, emotional, and moody. As someone with ADHD I needed to keep my life interesting. I often found myself getting bored and uninterested after learning the information.
I realized that I could pick up techniques from prestigious Universities as well as continuing to create my own voice within my art work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. As life affects me so does my art. I go through waves of wanting to paint everyday to going silent.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My art gets your attention. When you see one of my paintings you KNOW it was made by me. It makes you FEEL something. I turned my love for painting into a full blown boutique business. Countless people have my paintings! Including some people you might know such as Diane Von Furstenburg (Philanthropist), Brian Grazer (Academy Award Winner), John Ridley (Academy Award Winner Writer/Director).
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is when my dad would bring home poached lobsters for dinner and turned on the original Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory! (The Gene Wilder one!!) It was pure magic to me! The bright colors. The insanity of it all… The extremes of both worlds. The charcoal grays and blacks in contrast to the bright bold colors of the world of Gene Wilder! I fell in love with his world. That universe of wild color and impossible yet (possible) imagination! That world was for ME!
