Life & Work with Sophie Morro of Glendale / Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Morro.

Hi Sophie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Orange County, California, but I went to Concordia University in Montreal to study Studio Art. The program encouraged us to explore many mediums, and that openness has stayed with me. Today my practice spans painting, music, and design.

This month marks ten years of living and working in Los Angeles, and the city still inspires me. It’s where I’ve built both sides of my practice: my fine art, centered on painting, and my commercial illustration and design work.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not always. For a while I was working as a server while writing my music EP, Homecoming, and there were many times I questioned whether this was the right path for me. That uncertainty led me to study design, so I could have steadier work while still pursuing my art. It gave me a skill I love and a way to support the fine art without compromising it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At the moment I’m working on oil paintings that explore the interior lives of women. I choose photo reference that I intuitively connect with, then collage it together to create new narratives that are sometimes autobiographical. The paintings have a flat, precise quality, with patterned grounds, cropped and often faceless figures, and a palette of blues, pinks, and warm darks.

Alongside the paintings, I take on commercial illustration and design projects and I also write songs. What sets me apart is that these aren’t separate hobbies. They all come from the same instinct for intimate, everyday moments, and each medium informs the others.

What I’m most proud of is the practice I’ve built and the artistic voice I’ve developed along the way. It took years of experimenting, doubting, and continuing to make work to get here, and today that voice shows up across everything I do.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My very first memory was of me mixing my markers in water, pretending I was a witch making a magic potion. There was something about the alchemy of the water changing color that stuck with me.
