Life & Work with Socially Awkward of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Socially Awkward.

Hi Socially, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
“I think my journey as a visual artist has been quite a long one, since I started enjoying drawing back in elementary school—and I still do it just for fun.”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a full-time artist who makes a living from art, there are indeed many challenges. All I do is keep drawing, pray a lot, and always have fun.
In my opinion, every day is indeed a struggle. For me personally, it’s a constant struggle to make a living as an artist in a country where appreciation for the arts is still very low.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a degree in economics. After I graduated from college, I worked at a bank for a while. But since I didn’t like the job, I decided to pursue my hobby—drawing. I’ve loved drawing since kindergarten. I started taking it seriously in 2014. All I did was keep drawing and sharing my work on social media. I’ve noticed that many people—especially friends from abroad—have shown their appreciation for my work. That’s when I decided to start accepting commissions. I make a living from home. I’m not sure why people like my work. I just do what I can and what brings me joy. And that’s something I’m quite proud of.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I just share my work on social media. One thing you could try is offering your work via Instagram DMs. I’m not sure if this works, but I’m giving it a shot. Some people respond positively, and some ignore it. But that’s okay—I’m happy.
