Life & Work with Sherry Vine of Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry Vine.

Hi Sherry, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started performing in drag quite by accident, 35 years ago. I performed a drga character in college just for fun and to do something I’d never done before and something clicked. I always say, “I started drag as a joke and it turned into a career”. Now, 35 years later, I still lvoe it as much as I did in the beginning. I get to travel all over the world performing my comedy show. I created the character in LA, moved to NYC, lived in Berlin for 3 years, moved back to NYC and then in 2019 back to LA – FULL CIRCLE!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well, I have been able to make a living performing for over 30 years which is an accomplishment. But of course there have been struggles. There was a period where clubs were only hiring queens from Drag Race and that was worrisome. But it also pushed me to stop focusing only on club gigs and search out cabaret spaces which has turned out to be successful. Also, Drag race did open a lot of doors in the world of TV and movies and I was able to create, write and produce my own show for OUT TV. When I started drag it was not considered a legitimate art form which was very challenging. And now, as I get older, I struggle a little with keeping up physically with hectic touring schedules. I can’t get up at 5am, fly somehwere, get off the plane and sing like I could in my 30’s lol.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m mostly known for singing parodies of hit songs. The Weird Al of Drag! My show is all live singing and comedy. I am quite proud of being able to stay relevant and persevere for 35 years. I had a lot of success with my YouTube video parodies of Gaga, Madonna, etc. about 15 years ago. I think I am mostly proud of my TV shows, The Sherry Vine Variety Show, on OUT TV and She’s Living For This on Here TV. Growing up watching Carol Burnett I always dreamed of doing a show like that. They were so much work but it was heaven to me.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I have never listened to a podcast lol. I literally can’t sit still long enough to focus. If I sit down to listen I immediately start doing other things and multi-tasking, missing out completely. I do play stupid games on apps if I’m at the airport or don’t have wifi. I love reaqding! But it takes me forever to get through a book because of the above. I just read Cher’s autobiography which I loved and currently I’m reading Less by Andrew Sean Greer. My favorite books are Midnight’s Children and The Mists of Avalon.
