Life & Work with Shane “West Coast” McClain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane “West Coast” McClain.

Hi Shane “West Coast”, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Well, I’m originally from Compton, California. And I initially did not have a genuine interest in music. I had a close friend/family member that wanted to be a rapper and told me because he wanted to be a rapper that because I was such a good friend to him, I needed to be the person to do the music! So because of my temperament and not wanting to have a task, I could not master before me, I learned everything that I could about creating music. including studio recording equipment and how to both read, write, and play multiple instruments. Shortly after that, my friend did not wanna be a rapper any longer, but I was stuck making music because a lot of the people in the area knew me for that. And it turns out that I was extremely good at it. From junior high into high school, I was a part of the music program and did very well. Throughout the city of Compton I was known for making music in working in recording studios to the point where I ended up getting invited to a studio session with the rapper DJ Quik and one of his producers George “G1” Archie Jr.

After that interaction, I worked a lot. with George. and Quik but I also was invited to work with a group that Snoop had called The Eastsidaz. So being that I was ushered into the music industry at a professional level, the only thing I could do was rise to the occasion. I ended up doing a lot of work with them and other notable artists throughout my career until it was ultimately time for me to start my own company, which I formed S McClain Music Group. Though we have worked with quite a few different artists in the industry, one of my creations was the artist Jamishin. That went well for a time but we had to part ways . At the moment, I still work heavily in the industry with artists directly and with production companies dealing with music for TV and film.

And to think I would’ve never done any of this if my good friend didn’t have a dream!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like anything in life that’s worth having, you have ups and downs, and I’ve been through my share of both. Especially working in the industry, a lot of the work that I’ve had is definitely due to my skill set, but also due to a lot of relationships that I’ve fostered over the years. Every relationship has its ups and its downs, but that’s when perseverance and your character shines through when given the opportunity to do so. So I would not take any of my ups nor my downs away from my journey because they have all helped to create the individual and the company that I have now.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In the music industry, I am known for the “West Coast” sound, even though I am a musician at my core and will always be one and am very capable of making all genres of music. I do think that one of the things that I have done very well in the music industry is kept business and personal apart from one another. I have somehow figured out how to have great relationships with all of the companies and artists that I’ve worked with without having to overstep the boundaries of professionalism too much)

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
There are plethora of individuals that will tell you do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life, and that is very true. But I would like to add to that because sometimes you don’t just get to do what you love to do. Sometimes you may end up in a career choice that kind of unfolded due to life decisions, and my best advice is be the best at anything you put your mind to. Let it be an echo of the type of person, character and moral values you live by. When you put that type of dedication into anything and speak that positivity into your life every single day, that’s what creates stars and moguls in this industry. The main person that needs to know that you’re capable of doing everything that you soon will accomplish, is you!! You set the bar for how great you will be, remember that!
