Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Burke.

Hi Ryan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Bluewater Sailing has been in Marina del Rey since 1978 and is steeped in a tradition of rigorous, methodical, and high-quality training. Our patient, friendly instructors have tens of thousands of miles of sailing experience and decades of teaching experience.

Many of us learned to sail as adults and realized it was the best thing we’ve ever done. Sailing totally changed our lives—it can really take over! Over the years, we developed a passion for sharing sailing with others.

We are focused on developing a broad, inclusive community of sailor-learners to sail, learn, and have fun together.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Sailing, like much of life, can be full of surprises: from the pleasant variety, like dolphins swimming along your bow, to the unpleasant, like an unforecasted gale blowing up. In our experience, and our students’ experience, the key to enjoyment is in the preparation. That goes for sailing, business ownership, and life!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are known for our rigorous, detailed, and creative approach to teaching sailing. We never stop evolving: tweaking our presentations, taking a different approach to a sailing drill, or developing new sailing opportunities for our students. Our reputation shines because we take the time to allow our students to learn “how to think” on the water—more informed, engaged, aware, and ultimately more comfortable, relaxed, on the water. The investment in our program pays dividends for life.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Like all good opportunities in life, there was a certain amount of “right time, right place” to finding ourselves running a sailing school in Los Angeles. We count ourselves lucky to be here doing what we love.
