Life & Work with Rachel Barnes of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Barnes.

Hi Rachel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a stay-at-home mom to two little girls, and I’ve always been a very outgoing, social person who loves connecting with people and sharing pieces of my life. Before becoming a mom, I worked on the med spa side of a dermatology office, where I consulted with patients about skincare routines, medical-grade skincare products and different cosmetic procedures. I also loved doing makeup and helping women feel confident in their own skin.
Beauty, fashion, makeup and skincare have always been things I genuinely love, so when I became a stay-at-home mom, Instagram naturally became a creative outlet for me. I started sharing little pieces of our everyday life, the things I was loving, motherhood, fashion and beauty. It was a way for me to stay social and connected while being home with my girls, and over time, it grew into something much bigger than I ever expected.
My story has also shaped the way I see motherhood and life. I lost my mom to breast cancer when I was just 12 years old, which was a huge loss that impacted me from a very young age. I think that experience has given me a deep appreciation for the everyday moments with my own girls and for creating memories with them.
I went to Northwest Missouri State University, and after college I moved on to the next chapter of my life, where I met my husband, Chase, in Kansas City. We’ve been building our life together ever since, and now our world revolves around our two daughters.
Today, I love that I get to combine so many of the things I’ve always enjoyed — beauty, fashion, connecting with people and sharing my life — while also being home with my girls. What started as simply an outlet to stay connected and have a creative space of my own has grown into a community that I’m incredibly grateful for.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. The biggest thing that has shaped my life was losing my mom to breast cancer when I was just 12 years old. Losing your mom at that age is something you don’t ever really “get over.” You just learn how to grow around the loss.
I had to navigate so much of growing up without her — my teenage years, graduating high school, going to college, getting married, becoming a mom myself — all of these huge life moments that I always wished I could experience with her. There have been so many times throughout my life when I’ve thought, “I wish I could call my mom right now,” especially after having my own girls. Motherhood has made me understand her loss in a completely different way.
I think losing her so young taught me not to take the ordinary moments for granted. It made me really value time with the people I love and understand how quickly life changes. Now, as a mom to two little girls, I try to be really present for the everyday moments because I know those are the moments that ultimately become the memories you hold onto.
I would never say that losing my mom was something I’m grateful for, because I would give anything to have her here. But I am grateful for the perspective it has given me. It has made me more intentional about the life I’m building, the memories I’m creating with my girls, and the kind of mom I want to be. I think a lot of who I am today was shaped by growing up without her, and in some ways, I feel like I carry a little piece of her with me into motherhood.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
