Life & Work with Oliver James of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oliver James.

Hi Oliver, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve played guitar, been in bands, and written songs for as long as I can remember. I’ve always wanted to make music my career, but have been pragmatic too. Having worked on Wall St for my professional career, I finally had the opportunity to stop working in the traditional sense in 2012, and made music my focus.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Choosing a music career is definitely not a smooth road for anyone I know, and I’m no exception. Music is one of the few career choices where talent and skill take a back seat to luck and timing. That can be very frustrating.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, and band leader. My band and I have released three full-length albums, two EPs, and a number of singles since 2012. I love the creative process of making music, and then to be able to perform it for people is an amazing feeling. Our most played song is “The More You Love, The More You Live” which was released in 2016. It has been featured in television ads and YouTube clips. And in March of this year, we released our third album entitled “Revelating.”

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve had the good fortune of playing with a lot of amazing musicians in my life. When I was a little boy, my parents to a theater in Hollywood to see the movie Let It Be. That experience definitely lit a musical fire in me. More recently, meeting Brett Levine who is my song writing partner, and my producer/engineer Alan Sanderson who has worked with everyone from Michael Jackson and Elton John, to Weezer and Fleetwood Mac. Both of these people have had a huge impact on my creative life.
