Today we’d like to introduce you to Nurse Ebony Shene’.
Hi Nurse Ebony, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am definitely a nurse extraordinaire if there is a such thing, I’m that thing! I absolutely love ALL THINGS NURSING. I got started in healthcare over 2o years ago as a Certified Nursing Assistant. At this level of nursing, all of the basics are taught. It is important that a firm foundation is laid as this part sets you up for the rest of your career in nursing. I didn’t stop at the basics of nursing. I went on to become an RN eventually in a position to successfully run a 248 bed long term facility. I never thought that I would ever open up a nursing school and be in a position to give back to the community the same things that the community has given to me. As a matter of fact, it is nursing that started me on this entrepreneurial journey.
I am the CEO of Scott School of Careers where we offer multiple allied health courses and practical nursing classes. I am an official inductee in the Illinois Nursing Association 40 under 40 emerging nurse leaders, Chief Organizer of The Chicago Nurse Expo, and CEO of My Nurse Design Apparel. Nursing has taught me resilience and strength on an entirely different level. Being able to care for the sick and nurse them back to health is not only rewarding but humbling. You appreciate your health more and do more to help others in the process. There is a selflessness that accompanies this profession that far exceeds understanding. I couldn’t have chosen a better path for my life. My heart is for sure in it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, there are always barriers that may stand in your way, be it challenges that come from everyday life or just things not going as you may have planned them. There are times where you may fail, people will try to sabotage you, and you will want to give up. Family may not be supportive of your efforts to change the trajectory of your lineage but you have to keep going with every breath in your being. Even when I’m at my lowest point, in the words of Weezy “they cant stop me, even if they stop me”. It’s true, just look at my progress. I look at how I have maintained my serenity. I am grateful for the physical and mental ability to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Now that’s serenity!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am just proud to be able to inspire those who have a genuine heart. I relish in the fact that I know that I am a vessel for change and progress in the communities that I serve. Self-actualization is the concept of knowing and understanding your purpose in life. Understanding my purpose in life is important and gives me a level of comfort and security in knowing that I am achieving exactly what God has sent me here to achieve. I’m here as an innovator through my accomplishments in nursing. I am here as an motivator to open doors for others to come through and dream big. I’m here as a builder and connector through the events I have organized and the positions I have held. I am also a proud pioneer, paving the way for others to enter into the nursing profession.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
In having to deal with the Covid 19 crisis directly as a healthcare provider, I have learned to be that much more appreciative of the things that we have. Supplies to protect ourselves and the technological advancements in today’s scientific world should be that much more appreciated. Education is power and the power of knowing saves lives. So many have been mislead and so many have loss their lives. My heart goes out to those who have lost a loved one due to the Covid 19 virus.
