Today we’d like to introduce you to Niki Detrich.
Niki, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My entire life, I’ve been interested in working as a model or being in the spotlight. I used to watch ANTM religiously growing up and all of high school, I idolized the beauty and fashion Youtubers who were popular at the time. I knew I wanted to be an influencer before it was a real job! I ended up going the more traditional route with school by graduating from UC Irvine with a business degree and going straight into the world of corporate sales. After getting let go from my third “big kid” job that I HATED, I decided it was time to make the switch into a more creative career path. I started out working with a modeling agency but have since focused more heavily on growing on social media. I now work with a blogger as her creative assistant and couldn’t be happier!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not! When I first started modeling, I was met with soooo much imposter syndrome. I never really felt like I knew what I was doing or that I was talented or pretty enough. With social media too I often times get so defeated at the slow growth or lack of money coming in. It’s really something you have to be very patient with.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My social media content focuses mostly on fashion, but I share all parts of my life and interests as well! My favorite platform to share content on is Tiktok… I’m able to be a little bit more goofy and talk about my random passions that relate to fashion. For example, I’m a huge Taylor Swift fan and I had a lot of success rating her concert outfits on my TikTok. It’s such a fun platform! I think overall what sets me apart is that I’m not afraid to show my real personality and struggles. I’ll talk about everything from period cramps to cleaning my room to mental health struggles on my ig stories because I want my followers to know that they aren’t alone in what they’re going through. My following is small but mighty!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think luck and privilege have played a huge part in my life. I was lucky enough to receive financial aid to get my degree at one of my top choice schools. As a white, cis-gendered, able-bodied woman, I realize that so many factors in my life have to do with privilege especially when it comes to a career in social media. I think as a content creator, it’s so important to recognize your privileges because many creators with the fastest growth all look the same and that needs to be recognized/ changed.
