Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Norton
Hi Lexi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello! My journey all starts in San Diego when I started taking baby ballet classes. My family always enrolled me in dance classes, which is when I quickly learned my love for hip hop. Around 9 years old I decided to join my first competition hip hop group, which included competing in World of Dance and Hip Hop International. I ended up doing training programs and working with The Lab and Supremacy Dance Family so I could grow even more in the passion I loved the most. Starting in high school, I started driving up to Los Angeles almost three times a week just to take dance classes in the industry. The dedication I put in every week got me to where I am now. I moved out at 16 years old and decided to live in Los Angeles. I’m now in college online and work part-time, as well as balancing dance and song writing. I’m always working to be the best version of myself and hopefully make my dreams come true.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Moving to Los Angeles really was a struggle. I had to make new friends and adjust to my new life. I feel like no one talks about the weird time where you’re fighting to get noticed somehow, but no one seems to see you. I have learned throughout these past years that you have to understand things that are meant to happen, will. The dance industry is such a tough place and certainly isn’t made for the weak. One of the main struggles I am experiencing is my goal to get signed. I’ve always wanted to have an agency and be guaranteed to at least do what I love, instead of not knowing when the next job will come. But what I’ve also learned, is that your drive to pursue something can get you anywhere and that’s what’s rare. All these struggles growing up have made me who I am today and I’m so grateful for the opportunities along the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a dancer in Los Angeles who worked her way along the road to get here. I moved from San Diego to pursue my dreams and take dance classes from the best of the best. I’ve learned so much along my way and I’m so grateful because I know dancers would love to have the opportunity I do. The thing I’m the most proud of overall is moving to LA at such a young age and not giving up. It’s so hard to already move out, but to move out halfway through high school can definitely put a toll on you. My dedication and passion for dance goes so far and I can’t picture my life without this form of expression. It helps me be who I am and express any emotion that words can’t describe. I honestly don’t know who I would be today without dance.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Dedication and positivity is what got me through this industry. You have to be willing to fight for what you want, no matter what is thrown at you. I try to always look at things in a positive light because then it can improve your life and make you a better person. Going through different dance teams, you have to be able to understand the director and what they want, even if it’s negative. I always try to take it as constructive criticism so it betters me as a dancer. This is what overall made me how I am today and kept me going.
