Today we’d like to introduce you to KARMÅ Kalypso.
Hi KARMÅ, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My musical journey began when I first began composing for piano at the age of 12. At that age, I had no idea what a DAW was (Digital Audio Workspace) and was notating my musical ideas by hand with pen and paper. Around this same age, I tackled my fear of public performances and played piano while singing at several local events. However, as I navigated through my teenage years, the cacophony of doubtful words around me became overwhelming. It felt like everyone questioned my passion, saying things like “music isn’t a career” and “If you take music seriously for the rest of your life, you’ll grow to hate it instead of loving it.” For a while, I let my music lie dormant, buried beneath layers of uncertainty and self-doubt. I tried other ways to make the people I loved most feel proud of me and my accomplishments.
It wasn’t until I turned 21 that I rediscovered my love for music in a whole new light. DJing and delving into the realm of music production using Ableton became my tools of expression. Music spoke where words fell short. At 22, a scholarship paved the way for me to attend Point Blank Music Academy, where I delved deeper into music production, sound design, and engineering, graduating from their BA program.
The experiences that followed were nothing short of magical. From performing at Burning Man to the stages of local festivals and underground events, each moment was truly inspiring. These experiences became the building blocks for the sounds you will hear in my debut EP, ‘LUMINERA,’ set to release on April 12, 2024, under Kalypso Records.
‘LUMINERA’ is not just a collection of tracks; it’s a sonic journey that mirrors my evolution as an artist and expresses the pain and grieving of recently losing one of my best friends in a tragic car accident. It’s the culmination of years spent embracing the transformative power of music. Through this EP, I invite listeners to join me on a transmutational journey, alchemizing emotions through sound.
I am immensely grateful for the twists and turns that have shaped my musical journey. It’s a testament to the resilience of passion and the endless possibilities that unfold when we choose to ignore self-doubt and follow our dreams.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Navigating the road of my artistic journey has been a mix of highs and lows, twists and turns that have shaped me in profound ways. One of the most significant struggles I’ve faced along the way has been grappling with self-doubt and the persistent feeling of never being good enough. It’s a challenge that many artists encounter, a feeling that can threaten to overshadow our creativity.
The solution, I’ve come to realize, lies in letting go of perfectionism and embracing the imperfect beauty of the creative process. I’ve learned that perfection is an illusion, a mirage that fades upon closer inspection. Art, in its purest form, is not about flawless execution but about the raw emotion, vulnerability, and authenticity we infuse into our work.
By letting go of the need for perfection, I’ve discovered a newfound freedom in my artistry. I’ve embraced the journey itself—the messy drafts, the unexpected detours, and the moments of creative chaos. Each imperfection is a brushstroke in the larger canvas of my artistic expression, a testament to the human experience and the beauty of impermanence.
Through this realization, I’ve grown not only as an artist but also as a person. I’ve learned to trust my instincts, embrace my unique voice, and celebrate the journey of creation without the burden of unrealistic expectations. It’s a continual process of self-discovery and growth, a dance between self-doubt and self-belief that ultimately fuels my passion for artistic expression.
In essence, the road hasn’t always been smooth, but it’s been rich with lessons and insights that have shaped me into the artist I am today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I wear many hats in the realm of music and creativity, making my journey as dynamic as the art I create. At my core, I am a composer, producer, lyricist, vocalist, and pianist, focusing on capturing emotion through sound, telling a story with each creation. However, my artistic canvas extends beyond music alone—I am also a graphic designer, painter, and creative director, bringing a multidimensional approach to every project I undertake.
What sets me apart is the perspectives that I bring to my work. I thrive on blending genres, pushing boundaries, and creating immersive experiences that transcend traditional norms. Whether it’s crafting intricate soundscapes, designing visually captivating album art, or curating immersive live performances, I approach each endeavor with a passion for innovation and a commitment to authenticity.
I am most proud of my ability to connect deeply with audiences through my art. Whether it’s evoking emotion or sparking introspection, I strive to create experiences that resonate on a very human level.
I am not bound by conventional expectations but rather driven by a quest to push the boundaries of what is possible. It’s this spirit of curiosity and fearlessness that fuels my artistic evolution and sets me apart as an artist who dares to dream beyond the ordinary.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
As an artist, I believe that success is a deeply personal and subjective concept, one that transcends traditional metrics and external validation. For me, success is intricately tied to the essence of my craft—the ability to capture and preserve emotions within sound.
At its core, success as an artist is about self-definition. It’s not about chasing fame, fortune, or accolades but rather about creating meaningful connections through my art. When I compose a piece of music that resonates with someone on a visceral level, to me, that is true success.
It’s about the intangible magic that occurs when a melody strikes a chord deep within the listener’s soul when a rhythm becomes a heartbeat that pulses in synchrony with their emotions. Success, in this sense, is the alchemy of turning raw feelings into sonic landscapes that transcend language and culture, touching the universal human experience.
Moreover, success as an artist is also intertwined with personal growth and fulfillment. It’s about pushing boundaries, taking creative risks, and constantly evolving as an individual and as a creator. It’s finding joy in the process of creation itself, regardless of external outcomes or recognition.
