Life & Work with Kaela Maree Villegas of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaela Maree Villegas.

Hi Kaela Maree, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey, it’s a dream to be speaking with you all, thanks for having me! At a young age, I was exposed to art in all forms while growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I was surrounded by a unique mix of desert landscape, a vibrant and significant culture, and a booming film scene. Being a very expressive individual, I started my journey in studio dance at the age of 3, competing all around the state and country. I was known for my expressive eyes and sassy attitude, but what I really loved is how I could be a storyteller through movement.

That love for storytelling soon led me to explore other creative outlets, particularly film… I could not stay away from a movie theater, it was such a safe space for me! Since this career path was new to me, I would spend my free time researching everything I could to get a better understanding on the art of filmmaking. As I grew older and more independent, I enrolled in acting classes and even signed up to be a background actor on blockbuster film sets in New Mexico—all while studying industry terminology. I wanted to be ready!!

I felt my work was paying off. Eventually, I was landing roles in several local projects, which gave me more opportunities to grow in my skills of acting and networking with other creatives. After wrapping my last project, I felt ready to take the leap and pursue my dream of moving to Los Angeles—to be surrounded by even more opportunities and to challenge myself further… Now don’t get me wrong—it was very daunting! But I was extremely lucky to have supportive parents, family, friends, and my soul train backing me every step of the way. My mama played a huge role in supporting my journey. I made the drive with my best friend to our new home and couldn’t be more blessed.

The second I unpacked my first moving box, I was applying for auditions in LA and searching for opportunities across all outlets and sources. I found my current acting studio and attended a trial class with Brian Cutler Actors Studio where I immediately felt the passion, drive and challenge I needed to grow my “business”. Because of this studio, I have grown more and more confident in myself and in my craft.

Since moving to LA, I’ve had incredible opportunities and worked on inspiring film sets that have continued to shape me as an actress. Today, I find myself surrounded by a wonderful community and support system that encourages me to keep going. If my 10-year-old self could see me now, she would be so curious—and proud—of how far we’ve come as an actress, a writer, a producer… and a dreamer.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth road? No… of course, everyone hopes for a smooth road when pursuing their passions and goals. As positive as my journey has been so far, there have definitely been bumps and turns along the way. When I first introduced the idea of pursuing this career to people in my life, I was met with misunderstanding—and even judgment—for choosing this path. What I had to come to terms with is that this career isn’t for everyone, and not everyone will understand why I chose it. But what I do know is that it is for me, and I’m incredibly proud of that.

Another challenge—and probably the most common—is financial. DUN DUN DUUUUN. Living in a city like LA is not easy. I had to figure out how to financially support myself while continuing to pursue my career. It came with a lot of learning curves, but I’m grateful for the position I’m in today—to be here, sharing my journey with you, and still going strong!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a curious and adaptable individual. Throughout my life, I’ve been able to adjust to new environments, people, and experiences—especially those different from my own. I channel this adaptability into my on-screen work, using it to fully embody any character I take on. I believe what sets me apart is my authenticity and my determination to portray a wide range of characters—so that my performances help people feel seen and give them someone they can relate to. Making even one person feel seen is what makes me feel most proud and fulfilled.

On set, I am prepared, ready and flexible to changes. As a professionally trained on-screen actor, I specialize and focus in memorization, cold reading, and improvisation. Some highlight projects I’m especially proud of include a sci-fi short film titled ‘The Red Market’, which my performance received recognition at several film festivals. I also worked on two motion-capture animated feature films, ‘With You’ and ‘Without You’, where the first has won awards at various festivals. Another meaningful opportunity was acting in a powerful and enlightening PSA by The Lincoln Project about women’s health and the importance of reproductive rights. That role will always hold a special place in my heart, as many women will deeply resonate with its message in today’s world.

Early this year, I had the chance to co-write, produce, and star in a short film with two close friends. It is currently in post-production. It’s a heartfelt, honest story about friendship and the growing pains of life. I can’t wait to share it with the world!

What’s next?
I’m working on as many film and TV sets as I can, challenging myself with roles I have yet to explore and grow into, stepping out of my comfort zones, and meeting incredible people and creatives along the way. As previously mentioned, I wrote, produced, and starred in a short film alongside two of my close friends, and we can’t wait to have it in its final stages for viewing and film festival submissions. We’re proud of the message we’ve created and plan to tell more stories for the world to see! Our short film is titled ‘everything’s fine’. Get ready for laughs, tears, smiles, and joy. Seriously!!

I always say, “What is meant for you will happen… and what isn’t, make sure to thank it before it walks out the door.” I welcome any big changes that come my way, and I’ll be ready for them!
