Life & Work with Jazmyne Fountain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmyne Fountain.

Jazmyne Fountain

Hi Jazmyne, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hailing from the Pasadena area, I am forging my path in the Pop/R&B scene as a rising recording artist and a pioneering makeup artist under my brand, Faces of Jaz. While music has always been my first passion, makeup became a transformative journey that began in 2022, shortly after my return to Los Angeles from Chicago.

My musical journey traces back to my childhood, where exposure to artists like Whitney Houston, A*teens, and Yolanda Adams sparked a passion for singing at just four years old. Growing up, I became a prominent vocalist in my church choirs, honing my skills and finding my voice within the realm of soulful melodies.

High school marked a pivotal moment as I pursued voice lessons, delving into Opera and Pop under the guidance of Victor Bell in Inglewood. It was here that I discovered my true calling in the music industry, setting the stage for my future endeavors. This led me to Columbia College Chicago, where I further refined my craft and graduated with my Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Urban Popular music, immersing myself in various ensembles and honing my skills as a vocalist and songwriter. During my time in Chicago, I showcased my musical talents at various venues across the city, culminating in a memorable solo performance at the prestigious Chicago Theatre during my 2016 graduation. I also ventured to Germany’s Pop Akademie in Mannheim, where I immersed myself in songwriting and music production, further expanding my creative horizons.

However, it was upon returning to Los Angeles in 2021 that I realized a newfound passion for makeup artistry.

Initially, Faces of Jaz started as a casual endeavor, with me experimenting with makeup on my own face on Instagram. But in 2022, I made the decision to take makeup seriously, establishing Faces of Jaz as a full-fledged brand. This journey was marked by various milestones, including my involvement in TV and film makeup, notably for the show WOW, Women of Wrestling, where I lend my artistry to enhance the performers’ on-screen personas.

Simultaneously pursuing both music and makeup, I found joy and fulfillment in expressing my creativity across multiple mediums. My journey reached new heights when I was hired to sing Beyonce singles in the season finale of Dancing With the Stars—a full-circle moment considering Beyonce’s profound influence on my upbringing.

This multifaceted approach to creativity allows me to explore different avenues of expression while staying true to my passion for both music and makeup.

As I continue to evolve as an artist, I remain committed to pushing boundaries and breaking new ground, leaving a mark on both the music and beauty industries. With each project and performance, I aim to connect deeply with audiences, evoking emotions and leaving a lasting impact akin to inspirations like Beyonce, Sabrina Claudio, and Sara Bareilles.

Furthermore, my musical endeavors continue to flourish as evidenced by the release of my Christmas single titled “Last Year,” and I am currently working on upcoming singles in preparation for my debut EP. Through my music and makeup artistry, I strive to inspire others to embrace their creativity and pursue their passions wholeheartedly.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Navigating my journey hasn’t been the smoothest of rides. Along the way, I’ve encountered personal losses, including friendships & relationships, which forced me to confront and recognize my true potential and the genuine desires I hold for my artistry—a process I am continually working through, refining and smoothing out the rough edges as I go. Delving deep into my own beliefs and anxieties, especially when it came to embarking on a new career path, was particularly challenging. There was a fear that others might misconstrue my venture into makeup artistry as a sign that my passion for music was dimming or a deviation from my aspirations of becoming a performing and touring artist.

However, with time and introspection, I’ve come to realize that it’s possible to be a trailblazer and a multi-hyphenate force in each arena, provided I give myself the liberty to explore and fully invest in every facet of my creativity. This journey has taught me the value of resilience and the importance of embracing every aspect of my multi-dimensional talents. Now, I am more committed than ever to demonstrating that one can excel in multiple domains, breaking new ground, and setting a precedent for what it means to be a versatile and dynamic artist in today’s world.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a recording artist and makeup artist known for blending my passions in music and beauty with my brand, Faces of Jaz. In music, I specialize in Pop and R&B, writing both for myself and other artists. My songs are deeply influenced by a mix of genres, which has helped me become known for emotional lyrics and compelling melodies. In the beauty world, I’ve made my mark with innovative makeup artistry, especially in TV and film, like for the show WOW, Women of Wrestling. I’m also excited to start exploring sync licensing, aiming to get my music into TV shows, movies, and commercials.

What sets me apart is my dual talent in music and makeup, allowing me to express creativity in diverse ways and connect with a wide audience. My journey is a testament to breaking boundaries and defying the single-path career norm. I take pride in being a trailblazer, demonstrating that success can come from pursuing multiple passions simultaneously.

My commitment to authenticity and exploration in artistry defines my work. I aim to inspire others to pursue their passions boldly and without limits. This unique blend of music, makeup, and soon, sync licensing, showcases my holistic approach to creativity, setting me apart in both the music and beauty industries.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is individuality. I believe strongly in the power of expressing oneself without limits or labels. The idea of being boxed into a single category or path doesn’t align with who I am or what I aspire to be. I value the freedom to explore all my passions—music, makeup, songwriting, and more—because it allows me to fully express my creativity and uniqueness. This pursuit of diverse interests not only defines my career but also enriches my personal growth and connection with others. To me, individuality is the essence of artistry; it’s about making a unique mark on the world in a way that only I can.
