Life & Work with Jason Scott Henderson of Beachwood Canyon, Hollywood Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Scott Henderson.

Hi Jason Scott, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Originally from NYC, I’ve worn various hats within the nightlife and hospitality industries. I started as a party and club promoter fresh out of high school then evolved into event production, booking and programming. That led me into consulting, talent management and artist development for others which turned into touring, marketing and branding eventually landing me full-time and freelance corporate agency opportunities. For the last decade, I’ve been rebranding in a selfish phase of platforming my own passions and talent as a singer – songwriter – selector under the alias, GETOVERHER. I also have become a professional nightclub doorman that’s PSO licensed in the state of California. Lately, I’ve been DJing a lot of pop up events for brand activations and private parties throughout out Los Angeles along with a seasonal DJ residency at SoHo House. I also run the door on weekends at Dot.Dot in Hollywood that’s the private speakeasy bar/lounge of the newly popular black owned restaurant, Linden. Over the course of my career I’ve worked with or contributed to companies and brands such as The Fader/Cornerstone, MeanRed, Mass Appeal, Pleasures, Hypebeast Magazine, Spearmint Rhino, On Running and Fusicology. As GETOVERHER, I’ve had my own music+DJ mixes featured in or premiered by Apple Music: Beats1, NTS Radio, XL Records, Flaunt Magazine, The Fader, VICE Magazine, FX Network, Rinse.FM, COLORSxStudios, Clash Magazine and Tidal. Other recent notable collaborations include a photo feature in the Blurring Books 2024 published BIG SHOTS!! VOL.TWO by Phillip Leeds, High Tide Agency’s 2023 ad campaign for restaurant franchise, Sweet Chick and a star acting role in multimedia artist Tony Oursler’s Imponderable in 2016 ℅ The Museum of Modern Art NYC as well as Oursler’s many other international installations to this day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has not always been smooth at all. There’s been many setbacks, repeated lessons to learn and worst of all, boredom. Waiting around for certain people’s promises or stars to align even after being proactive and self sufficient has bruised my ego. Learning to be patient and accepting what I cannot control continues to trigger me at times. I moved from my toxic hometown’s art scene to start fresh so despite having some connections and mild direction out here in LA I still have to constantly (re)introduce myself and prove my worthiness of other’s time, resources or favors. I also don’t drive but I remain driven! I’m motivated and hustle like a New Yorker so much that I’m told I can be aggressive from the point of view of local Los Angelenos who may be used to a more terminally chill work flow. Maintaining my NYC mindset here on the West Coast definitely allows me to stand out in the best ways.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a musician first and a DJ, second. Music is my life and I’m doing my best to find as many ways to express that passion out of love while having fun but also for a living to make money. R&B is my foundation sound but I have an appreciation for all genres. I create and play out any and everything that moves my spirit. My taste is my main tool and asset. As a DJ and songwriter, I label my style as; World Soul instead of the cliché, ‘open format’ title. Especially being a black man, I don’t want to be boxed into stereotypes or fit what’s expected based on my appearance so I intentionally try to rebel against trends, norms and the obvious. Even my style of dressing is influenced by my discernment of visual art history, color palettes, heritage and understanding balance and symmetry through experience. Musically, I tastefully curate a balance of popular culture and mainstream songs combined with experimental underground rarities to keep the ambiance interesting and familiar yet refreshing. I believe a DJs job is to educate as well as entertain. As a writer and vocalist, I strive to tell my stories in unique ways that are catchy and accessible while developing my own uniquely branded sound. I’m influenced by so many music artists before me whom I always keep in mind. My influences include: Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Prince, Michael and Janet Jackson, Bjork, Raphael Saadiq, The-Dream, Tinashe, Charli xcx, Cashmere Cat, Azealia Banks and Kelela just to name a few. My favorite DJs are Josey Rebelle, Total Freedom/Bobby Beethoven and Kingdom who each blend and bend so many genres in the most fluid and concise ways. Creatively, I’m most proud of the new music I’ll be releasing ASAP this year in 2025 that’s my best work to date. I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with friends, family and even some of my heroes from all over the world. My next original music project is entitled, CONCIERGE.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m shy. I’m very sensitive and moody. As a water sign I have to constantly not allow other people’s energy to consume me nor take certain things personally and master detachment. Since my jobs and hobbies are socially driven I tend to require a lot of alone time to recharge and replenish in order to be fully present when I’m back in the world. 50% extrovert, 50% introvert.
