Life & Work with Heather Cie Kirk of Malibu, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Cie Kirk.

Hi Heather Cie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been a creative person, and experimenting with color is something I did at a very
young age. My Malibu Barbie doll was my first “client” at 8 years old, and I continued exploring
the magic of hair color on friends in high school. Before pursuing my dream career, I worked in
retail as a professional personal shopper and stylist, but my heart was always in hair. So, I
decided to enroll in cosmetology school and get my license. Post-graduation, I started working in
Beverly Hills for the incredible Tracey Cunningham, who gave me my first job, mentored me,
and trusted me to work on some of the most high-profile clients & celebrities in all of Los
Angeles. I have been a colorist now for over fifteen years, and opened CIE SALON ten years
ago. We are a boutique salon, located in the heart of the Malibu Country Mart. Owning my own
business is one of my greatest accomplishments, but I truly love making people feel beautiful,
confident, and inspired through the art of hair color.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Amidst a pandemic, road closures, inflation, and numerous wildfires, the road to success in
Malibu hasn’t been easy for me or the salon. Community has always been at the center of my
business and it always shines through—the Malibu locals have shown time and time again what
resilience looks like.
Following the most recent blaze in the Palisades and five months of closures along PCH, I’ve
expanded my reach to once again meet clients in Beverly Hills—making it easier for those who
could no longer access Malibu. Getting your hair done is therapy and many of our clients needed
just that. A familiar face, a safe space to talk and to feel good about themselves after all the
devastation they went through.
I truly credit my longevity not just to hard work and my team in the salon, but to the unwavering
support of this small but mighty community.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a color specialist and everyone at CIE has a specific specialty whether it be cutting or color. I specialize in blonding and seamless beach blonde highlights but have explored working with every hair color and always love a new challenge.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I feel lucky everyday that I get to work in such a beautiful place. Malibu is unbelievably special
and so are its residents. I am so grateful to be able to connect with my clients and community
everyday. The past years have been challenging, but we make the most of it and try to leave the
best mark we can while we can! Luck seems to always strike when we need it.
