Today we’d like to introduce you to Edwin Garcia
Hi Edwin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Well, I’ve loved basketball since I watched it in the ’90s as a kid. Sports have always been my passion, and I have been obsessed with it. In the summer, I was maniacal. I’d listen to sports talk radio all morning and afternoon long, then watch the national television games at night and SportsCenter before going to sleep. Then, I repeated the process the next day. I could never get enough. During my college days, I took my first big break from watching sports, and after my school days were over, I got back at it. When I returned to sports, somehow, the love only got stronger. I suddenly needed to watch and talk about the game and write about it. At first, I wrote just for fun and to scratch that itch. Quickly, it went from a fun side project to my life, and before I knew it, I pivoted from my music career to a sports writer. I now cover the Lakers, Sparks, NBA, WNBA, and everything in between.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, for me, it was. I’ve quickly grown from no sports writing to being a credentialed journalist covering the Lakers. I had some advantages to start with. First of all, I always loved writing. I was the guy who got A’s on all his college papers and did so relatively easily. So pursuing sports writing was really me leaning into my strengths. The hardest part was probably financial. I had to make a lot of sacrifices in the beginning. I had a good music career before all this, but I couldn’t continue it while pursuing a career in sports. Both jobs are nighttime ones, and I can’t be at two places at once. So, I actually went to corporate America to pursue my dreams. I took a 9-5 marketing job so that way I’d have the time I needed to do my sports work. In a couple of years, I was able to go full-time in sports, and it’s been going well. Everyone’s path is different, and just cause mine hasn’t been the hardest so far doesn’t mean it won’t get tougher later. I see many people coming up who are bitter that they don’t have spots like mine or frustrated that they aren’t where they want to be. As someone who has made it, I’ve quickly realized it’s even harder to stay here than it is to get here.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known most for being a Senior Editor at Silver Screen and Roll. The site covers the Lakers and Sparks and does so at the highest level. That means covering games, going to practices, and all other media-related events. What I feel separates me is writing features that go beyond the box score and get at the bigger picture of what’s happening with the team I’m covering. Sometimes, that means focusing on one player’s performance; other times, it deals with more general basketball ideologies or even a life philosophy that is playing out on the court. When I attend games, the mission is to tell the story of what mattered in the game, what I saw that is unique to my experience, and finding a way of telling that story to everyone else so they feel that they were sitting right there with me.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Oof, that’s a box I like to keep locked away. The most fun I usually had was with my sister. So my best memories were probably hanging out with her or watching the biggest sporting events of the 90s growing up.
