Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Billingslea.
Hi Cynthia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hey Girlfriend Network began with a simple desire: to bring people together, create meaningful connections, and help others in my community. What started as a way to connect girlfriends, share information, support businesses, and enjoy positive experiences together gradually grew into something much bigger than I ever imagined.
Over the years, I saw firsthand how many people needed more than social connections—they needed resources, encouragement, opportunities, and someone willing to connect them to help. That realization helped shape Hey Girlfriend Network into a community-focused nonprofit organization committed to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
My journey has always been centered around service. Through Hey Girlfriend Network, I have organized community outreach efforts, supported small businesses, connected people with employment and housing resources, distributed food, clothing and hygiene products, and created events focused on health, wellness, empowerment and connection.
Along the way, I have built relationships with businesses, community organizations, sponsors, speakers, entertainers and everyday people who believe in giving back. What began as a small vision has grown into a network reaching thousands of people through social media, community outreach, partnerships and events.
I didn’t get to where I am today overnight. It has taken years of consistency, relationship building, learning, sacrifice and a genuine commitment to serving others. Some of the greatest lessons came from simply listening to what people needed and then asking myself, “How can I help?”
Today, I am proud of what Hey Girlfriend Network has become, but I also know there is much more work to do. My goal is to continue expanding our community impact, developing meaningful partnerships and creating opportunities that bring people and resources together.
At the heart of everything I do is a belief that has guided me throughout this journey:
“Be the positive change you want to see in others.”
That is how Hey Girlfriend Network started, that is what has carried me to where I am today, and that is the legacy I hope to continue building.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like many grassroots organizations, I started with a vision but without unlimited resources, major funding, or a large staff behind me. Much of what I built required me to wear many hats—organizer, promoter, fundraiser, community advocate, event planner, problem solver, and sometimes even the person handling the smallest details behind the scenes.
There were times when I had to personally invest my own time, energy, and resources to keep the vision moving forward. I experienced disappointments, unexpected setbacks, people who didn’t always follow through, financial challenges, and moments when things simply did not go according to plan. I also had to learn that everyone who starts the journey with you will not necessarily remain with you as you grow.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Cynthia Billingslea has built her life around service, compassion, community, and helping others. After dedicating 32 years to government service, Cynthia retired from a successful career, but retirement did not mean the end of her commitment to serving others—it opened the door to an even greater purpose.
Cynthia is also the Founder of Hey Girlfriend Network, which she established in 2007 with a vision of bringing people together, creating meaningful connections, sharing resources, supporting businesses, and making a positive difference in the community. What began as a simple idea has grown into a community-focused nonprofit organization that has touched thousands of lives through outreach, resources, events, partnerships, and community engagement.
In 2027, Cynthia and Hey Girlfriend Network will proudly celebrate their 20th anniversary—a milestone representing two decades of perseverance, relationship building, community service, and creating opportunities for people to connect and support one another.
Service has also played a deeply personal role in Cynthia’s life. For 14 years, she lovingly cared for her grandmother, an experience that became one of the most meaningful chapters of her journey. Being a family caregiver gave Cynthia firsthand knowledge of the patience, sacrifice, compassion, and strength required to care for an aging loved one. She learned that caregiving is about much more than meeting someone’s physical needs—it is also about preserving dignity, providing companionship, advocating for loved ones, and making sure they know they are not alone.
After the passing of her beloved grandmother, Cynthia decided to turn her personal caregiving experience into another purpose. Rather than allowing that chapter of her life to simply end, she chose to use what she had learned to help other individuals and families navigating their own caregiving journeys.
Cynthia became a Certified Home Care Aide and later a Community Health Worker, expanding her ability to support individuals not only through hands-on care but also by helping people connect with valuable health, wellness, and community resources.
Her journey represents the many ways a life of service can evolve—from 32 years of government service, to nearly 20 years leading Hey Girlfriend Network, to 14 years caring for her grandmother, and ultimately becoming a trained professional dedicated to helping others live with greater dignity, support, and connection.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
One of the biggest reasons for the success and longevity of Hey Girlfriend Network has been the incredible support of our community. I may have founded the organization and had the vision, but I have never built it alone.
Over the years, people have supported our events, shared our information, recommended our organization to others, supported the businesses we promote, participated in our community outreach efforts, volunteered, partnered with us, and simply continued to believe in what Hey Girlfriend Network represents. That consistent support has helped turn a vision that began in 2007 into a thriving community network.
Today, our reach includes more than 36,000 followers on Facebook and over 16,000 followers on Instagram, but to me, those numbers represent much more than social media followers. They represent people, relationships, connections, and a community that has grown with me throughout this journey.
I am extremely grateful because every person who attended an event, shared a post, referred a friend, supported a vendor, donated an item, volunteered their time, offered encouragement, became a sponsor, or partnered with Hey Girlfriend Network has contributed in some way to our success.
As we approach our 20th anniversary in 2027, I recognize that this milestone belongs not only to me, but to the community that has supported Hey Girlfriend Network throughout the years.
The community didn’t just support Hey Girlfriend Network—the community helped build Hey Girlfriend Network. And for that, I will always be grateful.
