Life & Work with Clare Brincat

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clare Brincat.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Clare and I come from a small Mediterranean island called Malta. I have been living in London for the last 12 years where I moved to study architecture and simultaneously found hula hooping. These two life-defining interests literally started at the same time! I trained as a hula hoop performer with the group The Majorettes, a hula hooping, roller skating troupe of multi-talented, inspirational performers (check them out @themajorettes). We have grown up together and continue to be a network of support and inspiration, not only for each other but also for those who happen to come across us.

I currently live approximately nine lives (like a cat!), mainly that of a designer and a performer, amongst other things.

I also hold a Guinness World Record for the Most Hula Hoops Spun While Rollerskating – I thought I would just slip that one in there.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest obstacle I find is that there is not enough time in a day – I would really do everything if there was. It took me a while to realize that despite all my various interests, I should try to focus on a few things that I can really cultivate. It’s hard to let go of some things but hopefully, I can rediscover them later on in life.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is really my life. I am a qualified architect. I currently work in festival production which I am loving and I freelance in event design on the side. I hula hoop and roller skate whenever I can which involves teaching and performing, but can also include producing shows which I really love.

My design life and my performance life are really intertwined. I allow them to inform each other all the time and because of that I always feel extremely inspired.

What does success mean to you?
I’m basically a bag of tricks. I love collecting skills along my journey – everything from design to making things to performance skills. It all started with hula hooping, a toy I had lying around that I became obsessed with. Once I somehow managed to make it a lucrative side project in my life, I decided that I can literally make anything work. With that attitude, I don’t let anything stop me. I always think to myself ‘If I can make hula hooping work I can definitely do this.’

Hula hoop performance has given me a lot. It has not only taught me about how discipline and practice create reward, but it has also taught me about how confidence and openness lead to great experiences.

I define success as happiness. If you are happy, you are succeeding in life.
