Life & Work with Christina Cheng

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Cheng.

Christina Cheng

Christina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
This is Christina Cheng. I studied fashion design at Wuhan Textile University in China as my undergraduate and also earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in the Fashion Design program at Savannah College of Art and Design. I’m really into fashion cause I like to wear beautiful garments and the way when people look at my design with an impressive face. I still remember when I was little, there was an old sewing machine in my home, the one that we needed to control the footstep frequency and the wheel at the right side of the machine to control the sewing speed. It belongs to my grandparents, and I saw my grandmother use it to fluently sew beautiful dresses for me. I was interested in that machine, and I think that probably the earliest experience I have crossed paths with the world of fashion, which planted a seed in my mind. For my fashion design concept, I am very interested in conceptual garments and commercial designs, and I tried to balance between them. I hope to incorporate what happened in my life and my perception of life into my design. After graduation, I’m still working in the fashion field to gain more experience, like towards the most updated trends — 3D and Metaverse. I think I’m still in the early age of my brand. But the thing that I want my potential clients to know is that just as in my all-collection designs, the message is “be true to yourself.” In this era of information explosion, one can be overwhelmed by the messages they receive, even burying their true self. I want to encourage women, including myself, to pursue ourselves and express only our ideas.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It is not been a smooth road, actually, I’m still on my way to finding a better path. As a student in the US, there are some status issues to actually holding a business. Also, I feel that I lack a lot of knowledge of holding a business. I have refined my design, marketing, management, and business skills over the years and have been learning and developing towards the goal of success. Over the years, I have also gained a certain concept of supply chain and new trends in virtual garment design. I will also continue to learn and develop myself so I believe I can reach what I expect.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Fashion designer, Fashion Technical Designer & 3D Designer. I think design is the expression of my own emotions and thoughts. The collision between my thoughts and social voices, as well as my hesitation and thinking when faced with various voices, are all reflected in my works. We have too many confusions and emotions that need some outlet, and we want to find resonance with the world. Conceptually, my design is my language, and I want to tell friends who resonate with me, let’s play together! I think my work is a way for me to understand myself. There are too many voices in society now, and it is difficult for people to calm down and find their true voice. What kind of person am I, what choices should I make, and what kind of life do I want to live? This is something that everyone has to spend a lifetime thinking about, and this is what motivates me. I am very able to accept new things and am also good at learning and incorporating new things into my thoughts and designs, such as the metaverse and 3D garment production. I think the 3D garment is a trend, and the virtual fashion market will open in the future, so I hope I can have enough knowledge and experience to welcome new changes and create more interesting designs. With a strong passion and drive for fashion and creativity, I am confident in my creativity and my ability to bring something fresh and original to the industry.

What does success mean to you?
At this stage, success for me can be divided into different aspects. Personally, I think success means being able to find like-minded friends, have fun together, break boundaries together, create unique and original designs, experience the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment in creation, and slowly explore our path as we move forward. For my brand, I see success as being able to build a positive, reputable fashion brand that resonates with consumers, gain a loyal customer base, and contribute to social and environmental causes through sustainable practices.
