Life & Work with Cheesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheesa.

Hi Cheesa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I am a singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles. I’ve been singing and performing since I was 4 in the islands of Hawaii where I grew up. I moved to Los Angeles when I was 16-year-old with my family to pursue music with my brother, Troy Laureta, who has also made a name for himself in the music industry. In 2012, I competed in NBC’s The Voice and made it to the Quarter Finals under Team Cee Lo. I continue doing session work and background vocals for various artists like Melanie Fiona, Deborah Cox, and Nicole Scherzinger. Currently, I am working on my solo career producing an EP that is set to release early 2023.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up Filipino, I barely saw Asian representation of individuals that looked like me in the Hollywood scene. I also struggled with my self-image and was often told that I was “too big” or “too dark” to break through. I can recall an A&R telling me to use bulimia as a tool to appear thinner on stage when I was 15 years old. I’ve been rejected many times throughout my journey. But I never let that stop me because I know there are many people like me that need representation and a voice to break barriers and stereotypes. That is my driving force -to become an inspiration to the younger generation to continue on with their dream despite adversities that may arise.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a singer/songwriter. While I am working on my solo project, I am a studio session and background singe and do vocal production with various artists. My proudest moment is when my single “I’m Not Perfect” feat. Charice (now known as Jake Zyrus) reached #1 in Asia and #12 on the US Pop iTunes chart in 2012. The song advocates self-acceptance no matter what your size, gender, sexual orientation, race, etc. I believe in inclusivity and allowing space for everyone to shine.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
There are many individuals that have helped me in my career. Troy Laureta, my brother, has always been a supporter of my career since we were young. We have performed together since we were teenagers, and we continue to work together to uplift our Filipino community. My best friend, Jake Zyrus, has also helped me in my journey with his endless support and mentorship. I have had the opportunity to work with some of my heroes like Nicole Scherzinger and Deborah Cox who continue to inspire me with their work ethic and desire to always strive for greatness.
