Life & Work with Charlie Hulse of North Hollywood Arts District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Hulse.

Hi Charlie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From my earliest years in elementary school, I had a love for creating, producing, and editing. At that age, these interests took shape in the form of screen recording and editing Club Penguin. This love eventually transformed into a certification in Avid Media Composer during film school, and several internships across film and music. There’s nothing like storytelling – and I am thrilled, as a graduate student, to deepen my roots in entertainment as a Co-Executive Producer with Sentience Entertainment. Since being a Co-Executive Producer, I have been able to bring the first two episodes of their new half-hour dramedy “The Single(s)” across the finish line into limited exhibition. Stay tuned and follow our dramedy @the.singles.series on Instagram.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t believe the creative and storytelling fields are ever without their ups and downs, but especially during the pandemic in the early 2020s, there were several roadblocks that were not anticipated including issues with permits and scheduling conflicts. But those years also taught me the value of teamwork and that with the right team anomalous problems can be solved with genius solutions. So, I am very fortunate now to know the team at Sentience Entertainment is one that is proven, and one I can count on.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create. I love creating art. I also love creating strategies as well as executing them to learn what is to be crafted next. I assist brands with their content, marketing, and merchandising their intellectual property. At Sentience Entertainment, I manually created merch for our tv shows, including buttons, magnets, and pins, as well as screen printed t-shirts. I had a lot of fun making clothing for the company. I also run a few brands of my own, including a recording studio based in Los Angeles, Elitist Studios, and a movie review channel called Fresh Out The Flick. I interview movie goers as they leave the auditorium of an unreleased, or early screening of a new film. I am most proud of the resilience and perseverance in the cast and crew of “The Single(s)”. As a team we continued to make our dream of creating our show into a reality. We successfully got to share our progress of the series in an exhibition at UCLA’s historical James Bridges Theater. The launch party was filled with smiles and laughs from friends and family supporting independent filmmaking. What sets me apart from others is the years of experience and tenacity to learn what it takes to achieve our goal. I enjoy creative problem solving and collaborating with others striving to create.

How do you think about happiness?
What I hope people can take away about me from watching “The Single(s)” is that community is very important to me, and whether it’s storytelling, or passing on knowledge that I learned in my master’s program at Cal State University Northridge in Music Industry Administration, I want to give back to artists. So far, I have been able to help some of my peers start careers in music or build up their brands, and that is the most rewarding. For now, check out everything we are outputting from Sentience Entertainment, and let me know if that shows.
