Life & Work with Charles Feuilherade of Beverly Fairfax

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Feuilherade.

Hi Charles , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve worked in the interior design industry for the past 23 years, starting out as a sales rep at trade showrooms, moving to managing showrooms, before going out on my own as an Interior Designer in 2019. I’ve always harbored the idea of one day having my own shop – a place where I can showcase my eye for “putting things together”. I’ve been blessed with a keen and observant eye. I learnt everything from my Mother who had a trained eye, discerning taste, and was extremely knowledgeable about the world of furnishings and decor. I live in the Beverly Fairfax area (near the Grove), and last summer noticed a “for lease” sign in the window of a shop around the corner from where I live. As I peered through the metal gate, I immediately saw “my shop” and remember thinking, it’s so close, I could walk home. Once inside, I knew exactly how I envisioned the finished look, and signed the lease. I spent the following 5 months completely refurbishing the space. I’m drawn to a clean, classic and timeless aesthetic when it comes to interiors, and came up with the name THE EDIT, adding the tag line CURATED INTERIORS. The shop is located on a busy block; anchored on one end by Terroni’s restaurant, ADANTE Coffee on the other. I opened on January 9th. and it’s been an exciting and rewarding start – I look forward to becoming a neighborhood fixture.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were plenty of obstacles and challenges. After signing the lease, my electrician informed me the electrical was not upon to code. The building is old (built in 1930) and the electrical and plumbing was bad. I had to rewire the entire space, install new air-conditioning, rebuild and re-frame the bay-window, and install a new washstand and toilet – all at my expense; let’s just say the landlord is very hands-off. I had a leak after the recent heavy rains. My painter who I’ve used for years was committed to another project so I had to hire a replacement. The substitute arrived late the first two days, and on the 3rd day arrived to work on a bicycle – drunk! Luckily my painter was able to rescue me a few weeks later.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I love about what I do is there is no formula; its an innate talent or skill to be able to see something (an object, furniture, piece of art) and know where and how to place it, and instinctively if it works. Thanks to my upbringing, I have a trained eye and am preternaturally observant, noticing the tiniest of details. I tell a good story, so when describing an interior space, a perceived look or feel, I articulate a visual picture for my audience.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My Mother was my greatest teacher, and I owe my visual perception to her. In opening my shop, I had the support and encouragement from my former employer, who I now count as a friend.
