Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Cohen
Hi carla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into esthetics happened somewhat by chance. After moving from Brazil right after graduating with a degree in Publicity and Advertising, I was attending community college to improve my English when I stumbled upon esthetics. Struggling to understand my own skin issues, I decided to enroll in the program. It was the perfect combination: improving my English, experiencing college in a new country, and learning how to care for my skin – a true win-win-win.
To my surprise, I enjoyed Esthetician School more than my college degree and decided to give it a real try! I began my career as an esthetician nearly 20 years ago, right after completing esthetician school. My first job was at a full-service day spa in Claremont, CA – the ideal place to start. It allowed me to learn from experienced estheticians and explore different aspects of the field, from facials and waxing to makeup and body treatments.
As I gained more experience, I transitioned into a managerial role at a med spa, just as med spas were starting to gain popularity. When the spa underwent major changes, it aligned with a pivotal moment in my life – I was getting married and relocating to Los Angeles. Soon after, I secured a position at a small esthetics office, with one single doctor, where I not only refined my skills but also gained hands-on experience in advanced medical esthetic practices.
That role became the bridge to my next chapter – opening my own solo practice, Skin by Carla, in West Hollywood 12 years ago. Here, I focus exclusively on skincare treatments, blending the results-driven techniques of medical esthetics with the pampering and relaxation of a luxury day spa. It’s the best of both worlds.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definately not a smooth road. There were many fears and sleepless nights, especially when I was on my own. For years, I worked 7 days a week—both at the spa and at a restaurant at night—to make ends meet. It’s hard to believe that the average annual salary for an esthetician is below $50k. Running your own business isn’t easy, but when you focus on improving people’s lives rather than just chasing revenue, the fulfillment you gain makes it all worthwhile. And with time, profit will follow.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I focus exclusively on results-driven skin treatments, from teenage acne to anti-aging treatments and all in between.
I’m most proud of building a career based on authentic care for my clients, of building a community, of helping my clients improve not just their skin, but their confidence and overall wellbeing.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?

For collaboration, I’m always open to working with like-minded professionals in the wellness and beauty industries to create educational content, host events, or share knowledge.
For support, the best way is by sharing my work, whether it’s through word-of-mouth, social media, or simply recommending my services to those who may benefit.
