Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Campbell.
Hi Ashley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I used to love drawing and painting anything, but especially faces. Life came around full circle when makeup artistry found me. I was one of few young black women who would wear makeup during the 2010’s and every time someone needed it done, they would give me a call. Although I had no professional experience, they were still willing to take that chance. During my time in college, my boyfriend (who is now my husband) encouraged me to take it seriously and so I did. Now, I am blessed to say that I have been doing makeup for the past 15 years (8 years full time) and I am so grateful. It’s amazing to do something that I love and that comes so natural for me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, my journey has been pretty smooth. It was more trial and error… learning how to charge a price that is feasible for the client so that I could build by clientele, yet also being fair to myself. There was also the struggle of believing in myself enough to commit to being self employed full time and not rely on a side job. I stayed working as a server at the Olive Garden for years before I was overwhelmed with work and had to let it go. It was so scary to fully let go and bet on myself, but I’m so glad that I did.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a self- taught makeup artist from Carson, Ca. I am an artist first and a makeup artist second. I am a mother of 2 boys and I am happily married to my best friend.
I sometimes work with celebrities and on sets, but I love nothing more than to work with everyday people like myself who want to look & feel their best for their special occasion.
I specialize in bridal makeup artistry. Being with a bride and her squad on one of the biggest days of her lives brings me happiness and fulfillment. Although makeup may not be important in the grand scheme of things, being able to make someone confident and feel good about themselves is so amazing and it makes me proud of what I do.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I was 19 when I booked my first paid gig. It was a wedding party of 5 women and I had no idea what I was doing! lol. I faked it til I made it and here I am.
