Life & Work with Amna Fadel of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amna Fadel.

Hi Amna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story begins with resilience, curiosity, and a deep belief in the power of education and community. I grew up navigating spaces that often required me to adapt quickly, mature early, and advocate for myself. From a young age, I learned how to balance responsibility, ambition, and empathy, which shaped the leader I am today.

Some of my earliest memories involve studying in crowded spaces, creating makeshift desks, and turning everyday challenges into motivation. I learned to find opportunity in limitation, and that mindset stayed with me. Instead of seeing obstacles, I saw possibilities — ways to grow, improve, and uplift others along the way. These early experiences taught me perseverance, gratitude, and the importance of giving back.

As I progressed academically, I became deeply involved in leadership and community advocacy. I immersed myself in student government, service initiatives, and academic programs that allowed me to amplify student voices and create meaningful change. Serving as President of the Associated Student Government at College of the Canyons became one of the most defining chapters of my journey. In this role, I worked closely with students, faculty, and administration to develop programs, events, and initiatives that strengthened campus life, promoted equity, and created real opportunities for students to thrive.

Leadership, for me, has always meant service. I’ve led workshops, supported mentorship programs, collaborated with community organizations, and helped organize events focused on student success, empowerment, and access. Whether it was advocating for student needs, planning campus-wide initiatives, or building spaces where students felt seen and heard, my goal has always been to lead with intention and empathy.

At the same time, I’ve been building my professional path through internships, work experiences, and public-facing projects that challenged me to grow, speak confidently, and step into my purpose. Navigating professional environments taught me how to carry myself with confidence, advocate for my ideas, and remain grounded in my values, even in spaces where representation was limited. Each experience strengthened my voice and reinforced my belief that leadership should always be inclusive, ethical, and community-driven.

Today, my journey is guided by growth, purpose, and impact. I am proud of how far I’ve come, but I remain rooted in humility and gratitude. My story is still unfolding, but my mission is clear: to continue building platforms, opportunities, and spaces that uplift others — especially those who are still learning to believe in their own potential.

Everything I do is rooted in the idea that success is not just about personal achievement, but about collective progress. If my story can inspire even one person to push past fear, doubt, or limitation, then every step of this journey has been worth it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, and in many ways, the challenges are what shaped me most. I’ve had to navigate environments where I often felt like I had to prove myself twice as much to be taken seriously. Balancing academic pressure, leadership responsibilities, work, and personal obligations required constant discipline, resilience, and sacrifice.

There were moments of self-doubt, exhaustion, and emotional burnout, especially when expectations felt overwhelming and support felt limited. Being in spaces where representation was minimal sometimes made the journey feel isolating. I learned early on how to advocate for myself, speak up when something felt wrong, and remain grounded in my values, even when it would have been easier to stay silent.

Financial pressure and responsibility also played a role in shaping my path. I had to be intentional with my time, opportunities, and decisions, learning how to balance ambition with reality. Every choice carried weight, and failure was never really an option. That pressure taught me accountability, maturity, and strategic thinking far beyond my years.

Perhaps the greatest challenge was learning to trust myself. Letting go of fear, perfectionism, and the need for external validation was a journey of its own. I had to unlearn the idea that I needed permission to lead, to dream big, or to take up space. Through every setback and obstacle, I discovered my resilience, strengthened my confidence, and gained clarity about who I am and what I stand for.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change the struggles. They built my character, sharpened my purpose, and taught me how to lead with empathy, humility, and strength. Every challenge became a lesson, and every lesson became part of the foundation I stand on today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work centers around leadership, advocacy, professional development, and community engagement. I specialize in building programs, initiatives, and platforms that empower students and young professionals, create access to opportunity, and foster inclusive spaces where people feel seen, supported, and inspired to grow.

I am best known for my leadership in student government, particularly serving as President of the Associated Student Government at College of the Canyons, where I led campus-wide initiatives, collaborated closely with administration and community partners, and helped design programs that improved student life, engagement, and access to resources. Through this role, I gained experience in strategic planning, public speaking, event production, advocacy, and organizational leadership — all while representing thousands of students and their voices.

Beyond student leadership, my professional work focuses on communication, branding, and public-facing engagement. I have a strong passion for storytelling, social impact, and personal development, which has allowed me to connect meaningfully with diverse audiences. Whether through speaking, writing, digital content, or project leadership, I aim to create work that feels authentic, empowering, and purpose-driven.

What I am most proud of is my ability to lead with empathy. I prioritize emotional intelligence, inclusion, and integrity in every space I enter. I take pride in being someone others can trust, confide in, and feel supported by. Creating environments where people feel valued and empowered to step into their potential is what motivates me most.

What sets me apart is my balance of professionalism and authenticity. I am deeply driven and strategic, yet grounded, compassionate, and approachable. I bring both structure and heart into my work, blending leadership with humanity. I don’t believe in performative success — I believe in meaningful impact. My goal has always been to build something that lasts, influences positively, and opens doors for others.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My biggest advice for finding a mentor and building genuine connections is to lead with curiosity, authenticity, and respect. Instead of focusing on what someone can do for you, focus on learning from their journey, asking thoughtful questions, and building real relationships. People are far more willing to invest in you when they feel seen, valued, and appreciated.

What has worked best for me is showing up consistently and being prepared. Whether it’s in meetings, professional spaces, classrooms, or leadership roles, I always come ready to listen, learn, and contribute. I ask intentional questions, take notes, follow up with gratitude, and apply the advice I’m given. Over time, those small habits build trust and credibility.

I’ve also learned that mentorship doesn’t always come in formal titles. Some of my most impactful mentors have been professors, supervisors, colleagues, and community leaders who believed in me before I fully believed in myself. Staying open to guidance from different perspectives has helped me grow both personally and professionally.

When it comes to networking, I believe in quality over quantity. Building a few meaningful, genuine relationships will always matter more than collecting business cards or social media connections. Be yourself, share your story honestly, and don’t be afraid to take up space. Confidence grows through action, and every conversation is an opportunity to learn, connect, and grow.
