Life & Work with Alysse Keemara Speiginer of Los Angeles / OC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alysse Keemara Speiginer.

Hi Alysse Keemara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Creativity has always been a huge part of who I am. I grew up in Southern California and have been drawn to art, design, and especially lettering for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories of becoming fascinated with lettering was when my cousin in Panama drew my name in graffiti. I thought it was the coolest thing, and after that I started filling notebooks with different letter styles and creating my own alphabets. That eventually led me into graphic design and gave me a strong foundation in typography, color, composition, and visual storytelling.

In 2020, I discovered modern calligraphy and completely fell in love with it. KeeKee Creates grew from there. The name actually comes from my middle name, Keemara. What started with calligraphy gradually expanded as I kept learning new ways to personalize things. I added hand engraving, painting, hot foiling, wood burning, bedazzling, and other forms of live artistry. Over time, I found the part of the business I love most, which is creating experiences in real time.

Today, KeeKee Creates has grown into a live event artistry business where I get to work with brands, retailers, event planners, and private clients throughout Southern California and beyond. I have had the opportunity to create personalized experiences at weddings, private celebrations, retail events, and brand activations. Whether I am engraving, painting, doing calligraphy, hot foiling, wood burning, or bedazzling, I love taking something ordinary and turning it into a keepsake that feels personal and memorable.

One of the most meaningful parts of this journey came when I discovered an old family photo of my great-grandparents standing in front of their business, Speig Signs Shop. My great-grandfather was an artist and sign maker, and seeing that photo made me realize that creativity and entrepreneurship have been part of my family long before me. It gave what I am building with KeeKee Creates an entirely different meaning. In my own way, I feel like I am continuing that legacy while creating something that reflects my own generation, style, and personality.

The business is still evolving, and that is honestly one of my favorite things about it. I never want to stop learning or experimenting. Some of my most exciting opportunities have come from someone asking, “Can you personalize this?” and me figuring out how to make it happen. That curiosity has taken KeeKee Creates from lettering on paper to creating on glass, leather, bottles, wood, and even some things I never imagined I would be personalizing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to turn something I genuinely love doing into an actual business. Being creative is one thing, but figuring out pricing, contracts, supplies, marketing, scheduling, client communication, and all of the behind-the-scenes work that comes with running a business has been a completely different learning experience.

There has also been a lot of trial and error. A big part of KeeKee Creates is being willing to experiment, especially because clients sometimes ask me to personalize things I have never worked on before. I have had to learn different tools, materials, and techniques, test what works and what does not, and sometimes completely change my approach. I used to think I needed to already know how to do everything before saying yes to an opportunity. Now I have learned that being resourceful, doing the research, practicing, and figuring things out is actually one of my strengths.

Another challenge has been the unpredictability that comes with event-based creative work. There are busy seasons where I am working event after event, and then there can be slower periods where I have to focus more on marketing, networking, practicing, and finding the next opportunity. There are also plenty of inquiries that never turn into bookings, so I have had to learn not to take every “no” personally.

On top of that, I am a mom, so building a business while balancing family and everyday life has required a lot of flexibility. There are definitely moments when it feels like I am wearing ten different hats at once.

I think the challenges have actually helped shape KeeKee Creates into what it is today. Every new material, difficult request, slow season, or unexpected problem has taught me something. I have become much more confident in trusting my creativity and reminding myself that I do not have to know every answer immediately. Sometimes the most interesting opportunities start with me thinking, “I have never done that before, but let me see if I can figure it out.”

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
KeeKee Creates specializes in live personalization and event artistry. My services include hand engraving, calligraphy, painting, hot foiling, wood burning, bedazzling, and other custom personalization techniques. I love being able to adapt my work to different products, brands, and events instead of limiting myself to one medium.

I think I am also known for being willing to figure things out. I get some very unique requests, and instead of immediately saying something cannot be done, I usually want to test it and see what is possible. I enjoy experimenting with new materials and finding a technique that works while still making sure the finished piece looks beautiful and fits the client’s vision.

What I am most proud of is how much KeeKee Creates has grown and how much my work has evolved. I have been able to take skills that started with lettering and graphic design and turn them into full live experiences where guests get to watch something being created specifically for them. I love that people are not just receiving a personalized item. They are also getting the experience of watching it come to life right in front of them.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very shy, low key, and mostly kept to myself. In high school, my nickname was actually “Quiet Girl,” which pretty much says it all. I was never the loudest person in the room, but I always had a creative side and spent a lot of time in my own little world drawing, sketching, doodling, and experimenting with different ideas.

Even early on, I was really particular about handwriting and lettering. I would rewrite my class notes just because I wanted them to look cleaner and more polished, almost like I was trying to create the perfect handwriting font. I definitely spent way too much time rewriting notes instead of actually studying or doing my homework, and my grades probably showed it, but the creativity was always there.

I also loved sketchbooks and would constantly doodle or draw whenever I had the chance. As I got older, I started experimenting with design programs like Photoshop Express and CorelDRAW, which opened up a whole new side of creativity for me. Looking back, I can see that so many of the things I do now with KeeKee Creates were already showing up in little ways when I was younger. I just did not know at the time that they would eventually become part of my career.
