Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Ebony Burks

We recently had the chance to connect with Ebony Burks and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Ebony, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
“I think a lot of people quietly struggle with feeling unworthy of the beautiful things life has to offer. It’s a kind of imposter syndrome , that nagging sense that maybe they don’t belong in certain spaces or deserve certain opportunities. What they don’t realize is how incredible they truly are. I’ve been there myself, and I know how powerful it can be to finally see your own worth and allow yourself to take up space.”

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a vocalist, vocal producer, and songwriter from Dayton, Ohio.I’ve spent most of my life in Los Angeles, California. Music has been my heartbeat for as long as I can remember. I’ve been blessed to work across so many genres, and I think what’s kept me going in an industry where longevity is rare is I write from my heart and sing from my soul.

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to tour and share stages with incredible artists like Nikka Costa, K-Ci & JoJo, Ron Isley, Earth, Wind & Fire, New Edition, Dru Hill, and El DeBarge. Every experience taught me something new about the power of music and connection.

As a songwriter, I’ve had my words and melodies carried by so many amazing voices from Brandy, Jhene Aiko, and Karen Clark-Sheard to BJ The Chicago Kid, The Hamiltones, and even legends like Dr. Dre and Gloria Gaynor. I also found unexpected success in the dance and house music world, working with producers like Alexander Perls and seeing my songs remixed by Tiësto, DJ Antoine, and more — which was such a fun new chapter for me.

You might’ve even heard my work on TV or in films like BMF (Starz), Raising Kanan (Starz), The Family Business (BET+), Shots Fired (FOX), or Disney’s Lemonade Mouth.

At the end of the day, I just love creating whether I’m behind the mic or behind the scenes and I hope my journey reminds people that when you lead with passion and authenticity, doors will always open.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
“The part of me that’s served its purpose is the people pleaser. For a long time, I focused on making others happy and comfortable ,often at the expense of my own peace and identity. I’ve learned that I can still be kind and giving without losing myself in the process. Letting go of that part has allowed me to show up more authentically ,for others, and for myself.”

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
you’re going to do some amazing things in your lifetime. There will be highs and lows , and some of those lows will feel heavy, but don’t stay there too long. Because when the highs come, they’ll feel like you’re flying. Keep believing in yourself , you’re stronger than you realize.”

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
“I’m deeply committed to advocating for the rights of creatives and protecting intellectual property. As a creative myself, I know how important it is to be able to create freely and feel secure knowing that your work, and your legacy are protected. This mission goes beyond music for me. It’s about ensuring that every creative voice, in every form of art, is respected, valued, and safeguarded.”

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
She lived fully ,bravely, and on her own terms. She didn’t just exist… she lived the way life is meant to be lived.”
