Today we’d like to introduce you to Zully.
Hi Zully, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was in my early 20s working at a grocery store, and my makeup was always done. This was around the time when YouTube was big and makeup tutorials were at their peak. I was approached by a lady who would come in often, and she asked me to teach a class for a makeup company she worked for. At first, I declined because I was so nervous, but later I agreed.
I taught a class of about 20 ladies and showed them how I applied my makeup, and that really was what sparked my interest in the artistry. From there, I started doing makeup on anyone who would let me and eventually went to a makeup academy, where I became certified. I had many opportunities after that and really got into the industry.
10+ years later, I still love what I do so much, and I’m more intentional with my craft.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was not always easy.
Not everyone in the industry is kind and welcoming, and not every client is a good client. I’ve dealt with situations that made me question if I wanted to continue doing this, and I’ve cried a few times. However, those experiences taught me a lot about myself, the way I hold my boundaries, and how I show up.
I now know how to handle difficult situations and people. I’m very confident in myself, and I’m okay with walking away when I need to.
I’m very blessed with my current clients and opportunities, and I finally feel aligned with where I am and the work I’m doing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m a professional makeup artist with over 10 years of experience, specializing in soft, clean, intentional glam that enhances my clients’ natural features. I’ve learned that I don’t have to do every type of makeup to be successful. I don’t focus on Halloween, special effects, or super dramatic looks. I’ve found my niche and stay true to the style I love.
What sets me apart is not only my artistry, but the experience I provide. I want every client to feel comfortable, heard, confident, and still like themselves when they leave my chair. I’m most proud of the loyal clientele and reputation I’ve built over the years, and that so much of my business continues to grow through referrals and returning clients.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My faith is probably my biggest resource. I spend time reading my Bible, using the YouVersion Bible App, attending church, and being part of a women’s community that keeps me grounded and encouraged.
I also enjoy books and podcasts about personal growth, business, boundaries, and becoming a better version of yourself. I recently really connected with The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins because learning to let go of what I can’t control and focus on myself has been a big part of my growth, both personally and professionally.
I also believe there’s so much value in simply learning through life experience. Some of my biggest lessons in business have come from actually doing the work, making mistakes, and growing from them. I still don’t always get it right and get frustrated with myself but I’m constantly reminded to just keep trying!
