Today we’d like to introduce you to Salil Bhayani.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey as a musician started very early in my life, but I would like to start my story from the year 2016. This was the year I moved from Boston to Los Angeles after graduating from Berklee College of Music.
The sole aim of moving here was to make music for films. I started off working on a few student films and eventually moved on to more independent films. One of the questions I often got asked while being hired to write music was if I also could handle sound (sound effects, foley, mixing, etc.). While I did not have the expertise to work on sound, I started connecting with friends and colleagues who were sound professionals so that I could bring them on to the projects I was working on.
Fast forward to 2020, I started my company cAMP Studio, with the intention of providing filmmakers the entire post-production sound. My fabulous team and I have had a great time working on so many beautiful projects in the last couple of years, one of which won an Emmy in 2022.
Our focus has largely been animated films, and we have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with directors from Disney, Cartoon Network, Marvel, to name a few. Our most frequent collaboration has been with TED-Ed Animation. We have also had our fair share of live-action films that include commercials, documentaries and more. I am grateful for this journey, which continues to be remarkable and challenging at the same time.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Entertainment industry is one of the most brutal industries there is, owing to a lot of factors, including an extremely high level of competition. Navigating the industry requires an array of attributes that are in addition to the core talent.
As a composer, it is my lifelong goal to learn how to write better music, of course. But, what I have realized in the course of time working in the industry is that one needs to be highly entrepreneurial. The ability to network, to invest time and money, to build strong relationships, to communicate effectively, to be fun to work with, to be able to take rejection on a regular basis, having a very positive mindset in the face of adversity, and above all, the ability to be unique, are some of the most essential qualities to survive and thrive in the industry.
The path for me has been anything but smooth, but when you enjoy all aspects of the game, not just the creative side, then it becomes somewhat easier. The biggest enemy for any entrepreneur and creative is fatigue, and that comes from being too attached to positive outcomes. If you enjoy doing something to learn, to grow, and enjoy process most of all, it can lead to longevity and a plethora meaningful experiences.
We’ve been impressed with cAMP Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My company cAMP Studio (cinematic Audio and Music Production) is a boutique sound and music studio based in Los Angeles for film and media. We provide music and post-production sound for films and commercials of various kinds such as animation, live-action, and documentaries.
Our goal is to serve stories through music and sound. When we are approached to work on a project, we think everything from the perspective of story first. The goal is to internalize the story deeply and then go on to the execution.
We are inquisitive, childlike, and passionate, but we are also highly motivated to get all the details right and deliver high-quality audio while often working on very tight deadlines. We love to foster good relationships with our clients so that we can create something unique and impactful together time and time again.
While we pride ourselves of working with a large roster of high-profile clients, we are most grateful to have had the opportunity to create with the same storytellers over and over again.
How do you think about happiness?
I am beginning to learn that being fully committed to things without expectations brings me most happiness, because it is deeply meaningful. Chocolate chip cookies also make me quite happy.
