Inspiring Conversations with Kim, Nayeli Burciaga, Cabello of Cherry Brew Coffee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim, Nayeli Burciaga, Cabello

Hi Kim, Nayeli, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello! Absolutely! So Cherry Brew started with us, Nayeli & Kim. Two friends, two baristas, with coffee experience ranging from management, to catering, to drink development, to cafe/fine dining. We hit a point in our own personal journeys where we’d vent to one another and jokingly express that the work we were doing for others, could easily be done for ourselves. We always valued our work, but often found ourselves being taken for granted in our work environments. So the thought of Cherry Brew came to light! This idea of having something of our own, where we could call the shots and choose the spaces to exist in, sounded like a dream. So overtime, with all the experience we had, it naturally came together. Our excitement came from the idea of being able to house our friends, make good coffee, and enjoy the process. Specialty lattes seemed to be what we were most excited to curate, and so in the beginning Cherry Brew was mostly the two of us in the kitchen over caffeinating ourselves. We can say that the support for Cherry Brew, and the love for what we do, is the reason we’ve gotten to where we are! We’ve moved from hosting pop-ups out of cookie shops, to throwing backyard pop-ups, to curating art shows. We felt the space we were creating for our community needed to feel more and more special every time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The beginning of Cherry Brew we would say was a little bumpy. We caught ourselves surrounded by communities that didn’t quite feel like ours. Our community – those who’ve supported us from day one – felt loving and safe, but the towns we first served in didn’t feel in alignment with who we were. Ultimately we decided the space/community was ours to create. We pivoted to hosting pop-ups out of our backyard and that’s when Cherry Brew, as everyone knows it, really began. Hosting in our home, in our hometown, encouraged us to move in ways that felt cohesive to who we were. It allowed us to really give back and hold space for the people we love, and those who were interested in who Cherry Brew were. This move also allowed us to be creative in our drinks. With us pulling the strings, it gave us room to perfect our drinks, fine tune our palates, diversify our menu, and enrich our knowledge.

As you know, we’re big fans of Cherry Brew Coffee. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Cherry Brew is a craft coffee cart that focalizes on specialty lattes. We focus on quality, house made ingredients and locally sourced coffee beans. We’ve hosted a handful of pop-ups and have participated in different markets/fleas around LA. We curate special drinks for each event and are known for our rotating menu, with our Cherry Mocha and Banana Latte being the biggest hits. We take pride in the craft of our lattes and the time spent on perfecting a balanced drink, while simultaneously placing importance on our drink presentation. We prioritize the taste of our drinks as much as we do the aesthetic, and value every element equally. We also love art and try to incorporate it into everything we do. From the graphic designs of our flyers, to the photos of our drinks, to the art shows we curate. We find the value in its existence and intertwine it with our own.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson we’ve learned has been to just follow through. Whether the turnout has been good or bad, we’ve been able to learn and grow. Opportunities have come up over the last couple of years that we’ve met with hesitation, but to our surprise, turned out to be some of the most fruitful experiences. We’ve met some of our most beloved people at markets, in cites, and at pop-ups who’ve appreciated our craft and valued what we do. While on the other hand, we’ve also experienced moments where we’ve been let down by collaborators we respected. We like to believe that these moments have been the learning curves, the world pushing us to become more aligned with our values, what we do, and the community we’ve cultivated. Making yummy drinks and perfecting our craft have been the core of what we do, but we also take the space we create very serious, and have learned the only way to maintain that is by learning to value our time and opinions, while staying open to experiences.
