Inspiring Conversations with Justin Shafa of Shafa Radiology

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Shafa

Hi Justin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated from medical school in 2016 at the age of 25. I completed a surgical internship at UCLA before moving to New York City, where I completed my 4 year radiology residency. I then moved back to Los Angeles to complete a neuroradiology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai, which I completed in June 2022. Since then, I have been in practice, both as a teleradiologist reading for multiple states and hospitals across the country as well as in-person at several sites in Southern California.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I was a chief radiology resident in New York City when COVID first hit. That was the most unique time in my life and medical career. Seeing a city like NYC shut down like a sort of zombieland was fascinating. I am very grateful to individuals in NYC who donated so much and cheered us on for moral support at the daily 7pm clap. Someone gave me a bicycle so I could avoid the subway, as I opted to bike 20 miles from Manhattan to my hospital in the Bronx to avoid possibility of getting infected. Another person donated PPE for myself and all my co-residents. As no one was coming into the hospital for the regular radiology procedures, a few co-residents and I were switched to the ICU, placing ultrasound-guided central lines in all the COVID+ ICU patients.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Likes – every neighborhood as its own unique character and vibes. It makes fun exploring and learning different places

Dislikes – the traffic
