Today we’d like to introduce you to JB Bustos.
Hi JB, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from Azusa, I entered the workforce like most college grads, only to quickly realize I felt unfulfilled. That changed when I walked into a CrossFit gym and instantly connected with the community, the environment, and the challenge. I began coaching, and that’s where I found true purpose and happiness.
Over time, I coached at four different gyms, each offering valuable lessons—both good and bad. Eventually, I became the head coach and manager at CrossFit Inversion’s Long Beach location, where I gained firsthand experience running a fitness business.
One night, while venting to my then-girlfriend about the stress and desire for more, she simply asked, “Why don’t you open your own gym?” That question sparked the beginning of INTRVL Athletics. We launched in 2020 during the peak of covid in a small 1,300 sq ft space in Buena Park. By 2021, we had outgrown it and moved to a 3,800 sq ft facility in Anaheim, where we’ve continued to grow—recently expanding with another 1,200 sq ft.
None of this would be possible without my business partners, Nick and John, and the unwavering support of our community. They believed in a 26-year-old kid with nothing but a dream and a willingness to risk everything to make it happen.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a new business during COVID came with many challenges and setbacks. In the early days, I worked nights to cover my bills while building the gym. There were moments I wanted to quit, but I reminded myself that the struggle was temporary and that I had the power to define what was truly hard.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are INTRVL Athletics, a community-driven group fitness gym that offers an inclusive experience for everyone—regardless of fitness level. Our mission is to help people become healthier both physically and mentally through challenging, supportive, and high-energy group workouts.
What sets us apart is our strong sense of community and the environment we’ve built—one where members constantly push themselves outside their comfort zones and grow together. We’re proud to be recognized not only in Orange County but also in neighboring cities for our commitment to creating a space where people feel welcomed, supported, and empowered.
What I’m most proud of is the culture we’ve created. Our members show up for themselves and for each other, and that’s something truly special. None of this would be possible without their continued support and belief in our vision.
To anyone reading this: I could tell you all about our programs and the amazing energy at INTRVL—but the truth is, you have to experience it for yourself. Come see what makes our gym different. It’s more than just fitness—it’s a community, and it might just be the thing you’ve been looking for.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories is spending summers playing rugby and football with my Tongan family, the Pauus—a friendship that grew into a brotherhood and has stood the test of time.
