Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Blaine.
Hi Heather, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Storytelling is in my blood. My great grandfather was a professional photographer and his camera never left his side. My grandmother was an artist of watercolor that evoked emotion and beauty in her work. My love for portrait photography was nothing different. I grew up enjoying taking photos of family and friends but it wasn’t until after the birth of my son that I took the leap forward and turned the hobby into something more serious. Newborn photography was what I was most passionate about and took every opportunity that came my way to photo shoot not only newborns and babies, but expecting mothers and families.
It wasn’t until my two children went off to college that I decided to focus my photography fill-time. I have invested a lot into learning- from the perfect type of lighting to the right posing, editing to delivering a gallery of carefully styled, soft artistic work. I have an amazing partner who loves me dearly and has been by my side every step of the way. Encouraging my dreams, lifting me through doubts, and celebrating my growth as a maternity, newborn and family photographer.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting my business full-time has been a mixed bag of emotions. While being able to put my energy into portrait photography has been a journey of passion, creativity, and connection, it has also come with times of stress, exhaustion and disappointment. Having your own business is rewarding but it comes with its fair share of challenges. Starting from the ground up requires a lot time, research and commitment. For portrait photography, you need clients to build a portfolio so in the beginning I held free photo shoots to build my portfolio. A large percentage of my time went toward learning, from the more technical aspect like directing posing, different types of lighting, and safety for handling newborns, to the more business side of things like marketing and website design and search engine optimization (SEO) to attract clientele. I invested in taking courses taught by well-known photographers, attended major events, listened to hundreds of podcasts, and practiced practiced, practiced. There are certainly highs and lows in having a business but this isn’t just a career, it’s my calling.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Heather Nicole Photography?
My photography business, Heather Nicole Photography, specializes in maternity, newborn and family portraits. I have a studio located in North Redondo Beach and my approach focuses on providing an stress-free, safe, and professional photography experience serving clients across Los Angeles County. My studio represents a warm, welcoming space for families-especially new parents. I combine simple but elegant posing, helping clients feel completely cared for through every step of the process. I integrate simple props in my sessions, keeping the natural emotion intact. I ensure my sessions are relaxed, baby-led, and meaningful.
Packages emphasize flexibility, personalization, and a seamless process from booking to delivery. For newborn photography, I have everything needed for the session; all parents need to do is show-up (and maybe a diaper bag with a few essentials). My approach is simple and honest. I believe as a portrait photographer, my job is to capture the essence of the person I’m working with. That job is the same whether the person I’m working with is 50 years old, 10 years old, or 5 days old. I want each portrait I take to be as unique as the person I photograph.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
A few surprising things about me: I’ve lived in multiple countries and each one offered a different experience. I have a degree in Psychology and was a paramedic for a small county for many years. A third surprise about me is for my 40th birthday present, I went skydiving in Ocean City, Maryland.
