Inspiring Conversations with Erin Washington of Baby Cakes Walk LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Washington

Hi Erin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From a young age, I knew that I wanted to be in the kitchen, making people smile from their soul. My Great-Grandmother saw that passion and began to share her love for food, family, and tradition with me. From picking veggies and fruit from my grandparents’ trees on my summer trips to learning how to turn those fresh finds into amazing treats and savory snacks, it was clear that food was the language of love in our family.

As I grew, so did my love for seeing the smiles my food put on the faces of my family and friends. After the loss of my Great-Grandmother Athen, I knew I had to honor her memory. What better way to do that than by using everything she taught me? So, before I even graduated high school, I made the decision to pursue a Culinary Arts Degree in savory cooking, later switching my focus to Baking and Pastry.

With baking in my soul and food in my heart, I continued to follow my culinary dreams, always searching for new ways to bring my Great-Grandmother’s recipes to the masses. After I graduated, I realized that I wanted to open my own business and started researching how to make that dream a reality.

Armed with my degree and some of the best dessert recipes this side of the Mississippi, Baby Cakes Walk LLC was born. From finding new ways to turn my Great-Grandmother’s fresh-grown apples into caramel apple cheesecake, to creating a variety of puddings and reimagining her famous peach cobbler, every treat I make tells the story of why I fell in love with food in the first place.

Every bite is made with love, care, and one goal in mind: TO FILL THE WORLD WITH LOVE, ONE BITE AT A TIME!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, my road has not been easy. I’ve been blessed to have had a lot of support along the way. But when life hit, and the people who supported me the most passed away, I lost faith in myself and in my skills. It felt like everyone around me cared more about the latest trends than about the true artistry of baking—making things that not only tasted great but looked beautiful too. I wasn’t ready to jump on the trendy baking bandwagon.

Instead, I chose to stick with what I loved, but as a result, my business began to fluctuate. Then, in a season where things finally started to grow again, I became pregnant and was bedridden, losing business once more. Now, after the blessing of having my two beautiful daughters, I find myself rebuilding once again, this time in my newly converted home bakery in Compton, CA.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Baby Cakes Walk LLC, I specialize in creating heartfelt baked goods that honor my Great-Grandmother’s traditions while also embracing
culinary innovation. Located in Compton, CA, my home bakery offers a range of offerings, from delightful desserts like Caramel Apple Cheesecake and a variety of puddings to catering services, meal prep, and cooking classes.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Resilience is the quality I value most in my journey. Life has presented numerous challenges, from personal loss to health setbacks, but through it all, my passion for baking and the support of my loved ones have kept me focused.
I’ve learned to adapt and stay true to my culinary roots, which has been crucial in rebuilding my business.
