Inspiring Conversations with Debra Hunter of Information Design Consultants

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Hunter.

Debra Hunter

Hi Debra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
“Who would have thought that my life’s narrative would stray from the path of a steadfast civil servant destined to serve as a city manager? Certainly not me. But as they say, the universe had its own script in mind. After 15 years of navigating the corporate hierarchy as a management consultant, grappling with the relentless barriers of the glass ceiling, I realized it was time to seize the reins of my destiny and forge my own trajectory.

Armed with a formidable fusion of project management prowess and information systems expertise nurtured through my education and experience, I embarked on an unexpected journey by founding Information Design Consultant, Inc. (IDCI). The timing, amidst the tumultuous dot-com implosion, seemed less than auspicious. Yet long before the era of COVID-19 necessitated strategic pivots, I was attuned to the evolving landscape of technology and intricate project dynamics, adeptly recalibrating IDCI’s services to stay ahead of the curve.

Over the years, our portfolio of projects and services at IDCI has undergone numerous refinements to stay attuned to the pulse of technological evolution and client needs. Through this entrepreneurial odyssey, I’ve gleaned invaluable lessons:

1. Perseverance and pragmatism are the bedrock of success.

2. Maintaining unwavering focus on delivering tangible value to clients is paramount.

3. Cultivating a supportive network of fellow entrepreneurs—my ‘tribe’—provides sustenance during the ebbs and flows, reminding me of the profound meaning and purpose behind this journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Whether it was death, divorce, illness, or just business slowdowns, there were obstacles and challenges to navigate. I encountered all of them – it seemed like the universe was conspiring against me. As soon as I got past one issue another would show up as if on cue. The result of these challenges could have made me feel like a failure, where surrender seemed like the only choice. Instead, I took the opportunity to redefine what success looked like for me. Don’t misunderstand; the challenges are real, whether it’s lack of work, lack of capital to keep things moving, or a sick day that takes all the energy you have just to crawl out of bed. But there is something that happens when you know that you have the determination and resilience to persevere.
