Inspiring Conversations with Carl Truesdale of Truesdale Facial Plastic Surgery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carl Truesdale.

Hi Carl, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m one of those rare people that stuck with my childhood answer for “what do you want to be when you grow up?” – I’ve wanted to be a doctor since I was about 10. A lot of my coursework and free time was devoted to science, math, the arts (I’m a portrait artist), and leadership growing up. I then double-majored in Biology and Spanish at Morehouse College, the historically black college for men in Atlanta. I went straight from undergrad to the University of Pennsylvania for medical school, then completed five years of specialized training in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the top-ranked University of Michigan.

My training culminated in a highly coveted fellowship in Beverly Hills when I was one of less than 50 facial plastic surgeons to be accepted into a facial plastic surgery fellowship in 2020. My wife and I quickly fell in love with the Los Angeles area and decided to stay here after my year-long fellowship. I started seeing patients nights and weekends, then officially started my own practice immediately after my fellowship was completed.

I now own and operate Truesdale Facial Plastic Surgery on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. My advanced knowledge of facial anatomy and artist’s eye enables me to deliver natural-looking results for a wide array of surgical and non-surgical facial procedures that contour and rejuvenate my patients’ appearance, as well as hair restoration procedures that address all phases of hair loss. Medical training is a long and hard journey, but I love what I do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I doubt anyone would say the path to being a fellowship-trained doctor is easy, and my path has been no exception. Since I knew I wanted to be a doctor from a young age, this goal impacted my childhood and how I approached every step of my education. I was always doing science experiments as a kid. In high school, I took many college courses so that I could advance in math and science, on top of school leadership positions and sports. I kept a crazy schedule in college in order to double major in Biology and Spanish while still devoting time to volunteering, meet-up groups to practice Spanish, student government, academic research, and tutoring my peers.

Being really busy in college helped prepare me for the challenges of medical school, where I studied and practiced every medical specialty in the academically rigorous Ivy League environment of the University of Pennsylvania. Then came residency, when I worked 80+ hours a week doing life-saving procedures as an Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeon. I did everything from removing facial cancers to restoring children’s hearing, to performing life-saving procedures on a mission trip to Ghana, to teaching and mentoring junior residents. This was one of the hardest periods of my life, but it prepared me to be an outstanding facial plastic surgeon. My fellowship allowed me to really focus on the subspecialty of facial plastic surgery, as well as to hone the business aspects of running a private practice.

Now, as a practice owner and entrepreneur, I embrace new challenges every day. I manage a growing team and am committed to improving the lives of everyone I work with. I’m amazed at the growth of every member on my team since they started working at Truesdale Facial Plastic Surgery. I perform the highest level of surgery while directing teams of medical staff. I meet with new and existing patients every day and tell each of them that the first goal is always safety, followed closely by beautiful and natural results that they truly love. It’s an honor to be able to positively change the lives of my team and my patients.

As you know, we’re big fans of Truesdale Facial Plastic Surgery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Truesdale Facial Plastic Surgery is a private practice located in Beverly Hills. We offer surgical and non-surgical solutions that enable people to look and feel their very best. I’m a Board Certified surgeon, skilled in cosmetic surgery for all areas of the face, including the nose, under-eye and eyelids, jawline, chin, neck, and ears. We also provide non-surgical procedures like Botox, fillers, chemical peels, micro-needling, and the most advanced medical devices for minimally invasive facial contouring and skin rejuvenation. Hair restoration services are also available for those experiencing hair loss. We also offer medical-grade skincare products. I work with each patient to create a treatment plan that is best suited for their goals and their skin tone and texture. I pride myself in delivering incredibly natural-looking results. I tell my facelift patients to expect to look like themselves but 20 years younger.

I’m the son of a scientist father and an extremely creative mother and am an artist myself. I combine my experience as a portrait artist with my advanced knowledge of facial anatomy and world-class training to provide truly transformative results. Whether it’s facial plastic surgery like a deep-plane facelift or a rhinoplasty (nose job), or a cosmetic treatment like dermal fillers, I consider each patient’s anatomy and goals to deliver the best result uniquely for them. I love that I have a diverse patient population – patients often say I’m the first doctor who truly understands them. It’s great to be able to provide an end-to-end experience that people really enjoy, not to mention results that help make them feel as confident as ever.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a really curious kid. I was always doing a science experiment or reading a book to understand how the world works. My parents would drop me off at the library or bookstore and I’d keep myself entertained for hours, devouring information on all kinds of topics. I’m still always learning – I listen to podcasts and Youtube shows on my commute and when I get ready for the day. I’ve also always been an active person. I also loved the arts. I was into everything from portrait painting to piano planning to origami. This love still shows up in my life today, as I consider the face to be my canvas and facial plastic surgery to be my medium. I ran track in high school and now like to go to the gym to decompress after a long day. Keeping in shape also helps me maintain my stamina for longer surgeries. I was lucky to have parents who supported my interests growing up, and I continue to spend time on what I love both during and outside of work.
