Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Hairston.
Hi Brian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Brian Nigel Hairston is a self-made entrepreneur, best-selling author, and the founder of Cobalt Steel Transport, Inc. in San Bernardino, California. For over 30 years, his journey has spanned commercial transportation, leadership training, and motivational writing. Today, his visionary leadership continues through his family and his international properties and ventures.
The Early Days in Los Angeles & Family Blueprint
• Roots:
Born in 1968, Brian grew up in South Central Los Angeles during the 1970s. He often reflects on the strong community ecosystem of Black professionals—from local butchers to neighborhood doctors—who shaped his early values of resilience and pride.
• Education:
He was an intercity magnet student who rode the bus across town to attend schools in the San Fernando Valley, attending Devonshire Elementary, O’Melveny Elementary, and Alfred B. Nobel Junior High, ultimately graduating from Chatsworth High School in 1986.
• A Dual-Mother Foundation:
Brian was blessed to be raised and guided by two impactful mothers who shaped his intellect, character, and worldview:
Phyllis M. Hairston (Mother): A successful radio, TV, and broadcast instructor, Phyllis taught in the Los Angeles Community College District and at the University of Southern California (USC) in the late 1970s. She instilled in Brian the vital skill of environmental awareness—teaching him how to read a crowd, know the room, and take intentional note of everyone he met.
Through her work, a young Brian was introduced to major producers, directors, actors, and the celebrated author Michael Crichton before their blockbuster films hit the screen. This early exposure to creative giants turned his own dreams into tangible realities, inspiring his imagination from a simple childhood restaurant doodle of C-3PO on a napkin to envisioning blockbuster success.
◦ Marilyn Diane Cox-Hairston (Step-Mother): Following his father’s remarriage, Marilyn—a distinguished LAUSD Assistant Principal, Principal, and School District Executive—entered Brian’s life to teach him foundational life strategies. She humbled and prepared him by teaching him that he would not always be the smartest person in the room, showing him how to share space with others gracefully. Her core tenets were honesty, preparation, dignity, and execution—instilling the mindset to never just “try,” but to do.
• Paternal Influence:
His drive was also deeply influenced by his father, Bobby G. Hairston, and his family-owned company, POBOBS METAL, INC. Operating as a Black Department of Defense Contractor in the Aerospace and AOG (Aircraft On The Ground) repair industries, the business specialized in hard-to-find metals. The enterprise was a NASA supplier alongside major global aerospace entities including Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed, TRW, Halliburton, and even the Concorde Aircraft.
Building a Corporate and Entrepreneurial Career
• The Logistics Grind: Brian entered the commercial transportation industry from the ground up, starting with school bus routes and early-morning shifts in intermodal yards.
Over three decades, he mastered the industry, teaching leadership, safety, and management courses for major school districts and trucking firms.
• Cobalt Steel Transport:
Applying his years of logistics experience, he established Cobalt Steel Transport, Inc., growing it into a highly respected intermodal fleet in Southern California. Rather than treating his team as standard drivers, he operates with an open-door policy, onboarding team members as “business partners” and training them to eventually launch their own independent trucking companies.
• Net Worth & Creative Growth:
Today, his combined business portfolio—encompassing his primary transportation enterprise alongside his international surf camps and hostels in Morocco and Brazil—has elevated his personal net worth to an estimated $20 million to $25 million. Alongside his business operations, he has expanded into the motivational space as a best-selling author, publishing works like The Hidden Informant: Saving The United States.
Catastrophic Medical Journey & Visionary Resilience
In 2021, at the age of 53, Brian experienced a profound, life-altering medical crisis. A catastrophic injury involving a huge blow to his head caused bilateral retina detachment, resulting in the loss of sight in both eyes. He went to sleep and woke up completely in the dark.
Following 90 plus intense surgeries performed by Dr. Babak Fardin, Brian remains legally blind. Dr. Fardin was able to successfully reattach the retinas in both eyes, though the right eye retina required a partial amputation—deliberately cut away because it continuously rolled up like a window shade. These multiple, highly precise surgeries allowed some basic vision and colors to be preserved, which Brian is able to perceive through the heavy utilization of specialized Braille Institute magnifiers.
Yet, he is unable to see beyond the threshold of legal blindness; his daily visual world remains entirely gray and foggy.
While this medical journey has placed him on permanent medical retirement for life, it has done nothing to dim his drive.
Passing the Torch:
Active Founder & Generational Enterprise
Though the physical onset of blindness forced a transition, it also solidified Brian’s true purpose. This pivotal era is when he fully realized and embraced his new title as Founder. Now, at 58 years old, he remains a highly viable, sharp, and influential force. Operating daily from his home office, Brian provides constant strategic input, wisdom, and guidance to his sons and grandsons as they manage operations on the ground.
Critically, every son and grandson listed across these ventures shares a powerful hallmark of ocean excellence, operating as ISA internationally certified watermen:
• The Transportation Torch Bearers:
Company leadership has been seamlessly passed to his sons who are recognized as the new vanguard driving the logistics fleet forward: Erick, Pete, Juan Jose (J.J.), Luis, Daniel, Anthony, Matheus, Marcus, and Sami.
• The International Hospitality Operators:
His remaining sons, Abdel, Mohamed, and Younes, manage and operate the expanding international surf camp hostel businesses.
• The Next Generations:
Working alongside them in the hostel operations are his adult grandsons: A.J., Aidan, Mattia, Manny, Alex, and Jonathan. Beyond these operations, the family legacy continues to flourish rapidly, overall encompassing 7 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, and 3 great-grandsons.
Life Beyond Business & International Surf Hospitality
Brian’s personal life is defined by high-intensity athleticism, a global family legacy, and a deep connection to the ocean. He is an avid surfer, jet skier, and open-water aquathlon competitor. His unique path has forged a multi-generational legacy of athletes and creatives spanning from Southern California to Morocco and Brazil.
Expanding his passion for surfing into global hospitality, he established two international surf camp hostels in premier coastal destinations:
• Tamraght, Morocco:
Located in a renowned surfing hub along the Moroccan coast, offering waves for both beginners and experienced surfers.
• Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Situated in a vibrant, wave-rich neighborhood in Rio’s West Zone, famous for its excellent surf breaks and laid-back beach culture.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. “Cobalt Steel Transportation Inc. did not emerge from privilege or luck”.
The Physicality of the Early Logistics Grind. Long before I owned a fleet of over 100 power units – big rigs. I had to survive the brutal physical and mental toll of the commercial transportation industry from the bottom up.
“I started from the asphalt up.” Those are the words that define my journey when people ask how a young kid from South Central Los Angeles built a legacy that now spans global surf hostels and a multi-million dollar transportation fleet.
My foundation wasn’t built on luck; it was forged through an unbreakable work ethic that started the exact moment I turned legal. At just 18 years old, I became the youngest school bus driver ever hired by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Navigating those massive yellow buses through the chaotic streets of LA wasn’t just a job—it was a masterclass in ultimate responsibility, defensive driving, and logistical discipline.
While driving those routes, I knew that hands-on experience needed to be backed by a razor-sharp understanding of structural leadership and corporate strategy. That drove me to earn my college degree from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) in Business Law and Management.
Blending the gritty, real-world execution of the logistics grind with the sophisticated legal framework of my CSUN education became my ultimate blueprint. It gave me the exact tools required to protect my assets, navigate volatile regulations, and scale my enterprise into what it is today.
It has never been a smooth road. From grinding out early morning shifts in intermodal yards to successfully succeeding my company, Cobalt Steel Transport, Inc., to my 11 sons, every milestone was paid for with heavy sacrifice. Even today, navigating life as a legally blind entrepreneur, I rely on that exact same grit I had at 18. I built this legacy from the ground up, using business law as my shield and raw willpower as my engine.
“Being a Black man in transportation was also an issue, and that is a reality you cannot gloss over when telling my story.”
When I broke into this industry at 18, I wasn’t just navigating the physical roads—I was navigating a deeply entrenched system. In commercial logistics and transportation, stepping into rooms as a Black man meant constantly dealing with systemic barriers, profiling, and corporate double standards. People would look at a massive commercial fleet or a high-stakes logistics operation and automatically assume a Black man couldn’t be the architect behind it.
Throughout my career, I faced situations where regulatory scrutiny was weaponized, profiling was standard practice, and my authority was subtly or overtly questioned. But I refused to let racism or industry bias dictate my ceiling. Instead, I used my background in business law and management to build an airtight defense. Every time someone tried to profile me or exploit a double standard, I used strict compliance, meticulous documentation, and the letter of the law to lock in my position and shut down their contradictions.
Confronting those systemic issues head-on is exactly why I structured Cobalt Steel Transport the way I did. I didn’t just build a business to create personal wealth; I built an empire designed to break those barriers down for the next generation. By passing the company to my 11 sons, I ensured that we established an unbreakable, self-sustaining family legacy that stands as a direct contradiction to every systemic hurdle thrown in my path. I didn’t look for validation from an industry that wasn’t built for me—I forced them to respect the blueprint I created.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
” When you look at my primary enterprise, Cobalt Steel Transport, Inc., based out of San Bernardino, California, you are looking at a masterclass in high-discipline intermodal logistics and strategic fleet management.
Here is exactly what your readers need to know about what we do, what sets us apart, and what the brand stands for: What We Do & What We Specialize In
Cobalt Steel Transport, Inc. specializes in intermodal freight logistics, rail and shipping container drayage, and high-priority regional carrier routes across Southern California. We are known for our meticulous back-office tracking infrastructure and rigorous workflow management. We take chaotic, high-stakes supply chain links and turn them into a reliable, clockwork science. We don’t just haul freight; we manage volatile logistics through strict regulatory compliance, ensuring that every load is fully secure and seamlessly executed from the rail to the destination.
What Sets Us Apart From Others
What truly differentiates us from standard trucking companies is our absolute commitment to institutional transparency and legal structure. The transportation industry is notoriously messy, filled with fly-by-night operations and fragmented communication. We completely reject that chaotic framework. We have spent over a decade building a flawless, documented operational archive. Every dispatch, every safety check, and every contract is managed with airtight precision.
Furthermore, our philosophy on human capital is entirely unique. I have always run this fleet with an open-door policy, onboarding our team members not as standard employee drivers, but as valued business partners. We train them under a sophisticated operational blueprint, equipping them with the logistical and business law knowledge required to eventually launch their own independent trucking entities.
What I Am Most Proud Of Brand-Wise
Brand-wise, I am most proud of the hand-off and the creation of an unbreakable, self-sustaining family legacy. At the end of 2024, I succeeded ownership of Cobalt Steel Transport, Inc. to my 11 sons. Watching them take the reigns of a multi-million dollar fleet—with an impressive average asset age of just five years—is the ultimate validation of my life’s work. We proved that a Black-owned enterprise could face every systemic hurdle in the industry, dominate the market, and seamlessly transition into a multi-generational corporate empire.
I want your readers to know that our brand stands for unshakeable reliability, structural discipline, and absolute accountability. Whether it is our logistics enterprise in California or my expanding international footprint with our premium surf camp hostels in Morocco and Brazil, we do not cut corners. We don’t operate on unverified social media hype; we operate on cold, hard data, proper paperwork, and meticulous execution. When a client or partner aligns with our organization, they are aligning with a premium, legally fortified system that delivers exactly what it promises, every single time.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
When it comes to finding a mentor or networking effectively, I have never looked for traditional handouts or formal matchmaking programs. My history shows that the most powerful professional relationships are forged through shared execution, industry credibility, and raw respect.
Looking back at my own trajectory—from driving buses at 18 to building an intermodal enterprise and expanding into international hospitality—mentorship and networking have succeeded when built on a distinct blueprint.
Let Your Work Ethic Be Your Initial Introduction
True mentors do not choose proteges based on random LinkedIn messages; they look for people who are already moving under their own power. When I was the youngest driver at LAUSD, my age didn’t matter because my discipline did.
Network in the Trenches, Not Just the Boardrooms
Some of my most valuable industry connections weren’t made at stuffy executive mixers. They happened on the ground, in the middle of operational execution. Over the years, my network was solidified by being active at critical industry touchpoints—whether engaging at regional trucking shows, evaluating logistics operations, or participating in professional banquets.
The Strategy: Position yourself where the actual decision-makers congregate. Show up with an intentional presence, a deep understanding of your field, and a willingness to learn the unglamorous mechanics of the business.
Anchor Relationships in High Expertise and Education
When you have a sophisticated foundation—like a degree in Business Law and Management—your networking conversations completely change. You aren’t asking generic questions; you are speaking the language of risk mitigation, asset management, and corporate strategy. This immediately filters out low-tier connections and earns you respect from top-tier leaders.
The Strategy:
Approach potential mentors with sharp, high-level questions that show you understand their landscape. Don’t ask them how to get started; ask them how they protected their enterprise through a specific economic shift or regulatory hurdle.
Transition from Protégé to Partner
The ultimate goal of mentorship isn’t to remain a student forever; it is to build enough leverage to create mutual value. This is exactly how I approach my network today—whether onboarding team members as business partners at Cobalt Steel Transport, Inc. or working closely with international associates to coordinate regional distribution hubs for surf gear. True networking is a two-way street built on absolute compliance, clear boundaries, and structured execution.
The Strategy: When you find a mentor, look for ways to alleviate their pressure points or provide boots-on-the-ground value. Turn the mentorship into a strategic alliance.
