Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Thomas

Hi Alex, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I lived in Mexico for a while, and during that time, I ended up ditching all my other shoes and switching to huaraches. They were just so comfortable, versatile, and minimal. That’s when I decided I wanted to learn how to make them.

I found a family who had been crafting huaraches for years, and they were kind enough to teach me the basics. I started experimenting with the designs, making them chunkier and into boots, which they thought was funny at first, but we ended up creating some pretty cool styles. We figured we’d see if anyone else would like them, and over a 40oz Tecate, we decided to explore where this idea could go.

I would still be in Mexico if I could, but for now, I fly down every couple of months to work on new designs. It’s a unique work setup, but we have a blast with it, and we’re excited about where it can go.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the hardest moments came when we landed our first brick and mortar client. When the stock arrived in the US – more than half of the 200 pairs had been destroyed by U.S. Customs. They drilled holes through them and tore out the insoles during inspection. I’d poured every last bit of my savings into getting to that point, and it felt like everything was falling apart before I even had the chance to start.. and no, U.S. Customs never reimbursed me for this.

I allowed myself a moment to feel sorry for myself, but quickly realized if I was going to survive in business, I had to toughen up and roll with the punches. I believe deeply in my product and what it stands for: culture, art, sustainability, community, craftsmanship. It may not change the world, but I do believe it preserves the things that make the world beautiful. And to me, that’s a fight worth fighting.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Locklear Thomas, we’re all about creating footwear that’s timeless, meaningful, and built to last. As a unisex brand, we blend traditional craftsmanship with a strong focus on sustainability. Our modern twist on the classic huarache features locally sourced, vegetable tanned leather and durable soles made from repurposed tractor tires. What sets us apart is our unique approach to the huarache and the belief that it shouldn’t be limited to just a sandal. We’ve adapted the design into boots and sneakers, combining the comfort of the classic huarache with the coverage and style of a modern shoe. While they may not be your grandparents’ huaraches, they’re crafted with the same care and tradition and we couldn’t be prouder of that.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve always liked to believe in luck, and I consider myself a lucky person in many ways. But since starting this business, that belief has been truly tested. It’s like an emotional and spiritual hazing, your ego gets stripped away, and you find yourself humbled time and time again.

I’ve come to realize that the real luck is finding other people who dream beyond the cards they’ve been dealt, those who understand the struggle and are ready to walk with you through the storm until you both make it to the other side. In that sense, I’ve definitely lucked out.
