Inspiring Conversations with Veronica Owens of Vee Beauty and Cosmetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Owens.

Hi Veronica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a makeup artist and I own my own cosmetics line. As a little girl, I ultimately wanted to be a hairstylist because I use to always do my doll’s hair but things changed as I became older. October of 2013, I was involved in traumatic car accident that left impairment of the right eye. For a while, my eye was very small and abnormal looking and that’s what drew my attention to makeup. I would youtube videos on how to apply makeup ultimately trying to use t as a coverup for my eye. The more I kept doing my makeup the more I began to realize it didn’t necessarily cover up the scarring around the eye; it really enhanced it and brought more attention to my right eye. I went three years without a full functioning eye, by that I mean my eye was as small as a pinto bean and I wasn’t able to see anything. In 2016, I was told to be seen by an eye specialist that specialized in prosthesis. Before talking to the specialist, I was told that I would need a full prosthetic eye and I didn’t want to do that because although I had no vision and my eye was so small it still had its movement.

After meeting up with my specialist, he then told me I didn’t need the full prosthetic eye just a shield. He explained to me because my eye still had 100% movement taking it out wasn’t necessary and that he could allow me to get my cosmetic appearance back with just the shield. Three years later October 2016, I was granted this shield and was able to feel like myself again. Once I got back to myself, I began to play in makeup EVERYDAY, and that’s when I found my passion. During this time, I was still in college pursuing my dream as a child therapist. So in 2019, I knew that I was almost finished with school and that’s when I finally decided to move forward with my makeup career and take a class with a professional makeup artist in September of 2019. From that day forward, I practiced everyday on other people. In March of 2020, I was ready to announce what I have been working on for the last six months. From that moment forward, everything expands my cosmetics line, my confidence has been boosted, I have been able to open my own suite, and I’ve been very happy with this decision of falling in love with being a makeup artist.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running a business has definitely had its ups and downs. I ran into obstacles that cost me money, time and sometimes had me second guessing myself especially in these unprecedented times. Building clientele has been one of my biggest challenges because makeup is already an eventful thing and by everything being limited or not accessible and the wearing of mask has slowed business down but however it’s been an upside to my cosmetics line. I get a lot of support from that, which makes me ecstatic because I invest a lot into my business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
